When there’s thunder and lightning, what’s inside is more frightening.Log line:

A Man is trapped, floating along the empty sea in a sphere of his own fear. Nothing outwardly scares him but the capabilities of his own mind. He goes through a list of sins and wrongdoings he’s done through his life, tortured by their consequences but tempted by their lures. All the while he’s unaffected by the natural violence of storms and viscous temperatures occurring around him.

Scene Synopsis:In a ball upon the vast ocean, a man is located, like parchment in a bottle he floats with a message, a clear and cruel message that he repeats vocally over and over. "I am a danger to others". The sun beats down but he isn't heated. He sees neither boats nor animals, stuck in a Perspex shell of wet wilderness. He battles and reminisces over his past activities in a crazed schizophrenic rage. His cell is his own company, alone in the empty horizon. The waves around him are smooth and silent, as he whispers about his regret, his vessel drifts quietly and peacefully until he begins to challenge his thoughts. He shows his true feelings. The sphere sways ever more increasingly as he exerts his temper, raises his voice and opens up his previously cowering body. Clouds gather around him and turn black as though the apocalypse nears. He screams his cruel desires. His rage intensifies and as he commences, a furious storm breaks out over the skies. His cell thrashes and crashes against the turbulent slaps of the surging sea. Still he stands in defiance of nature’s most powerful forces. Thunder claps in the air like a million galloping stallions. “I am a danger to others” His circular cell is plunged below tonnes of waves and rain and then thrown back out into the air; it bounces and is sideswiped by currents and gusts. Still unaffected by all of this, the man rises to his feet again, imposing and grotesque with power, “I AM A DANGER TO ALL!” Lightening lights up the entirety and a crash of eardrum bursting intensity numbs all the senses. All that can be seen is white, and all that can be heard is a deafening silence. Slowly the white fades back to an empty calm ocean, whispering waves and wandering winds will suggest calmness and cool. The man and his tomb have now vanished.

Idea

My idea is to do an installation piece based around the film in my proposal. The installation would be based inside a square room, projections of the location would be on each wall within along with a lit strong Perspex clear flooring that contains water. Four LCD screens will face each wall so an audience member can see the action no matter where they stand, and speakers will be dotted all over a black ceiling. The projections, water and sound will react and change along with the intensity of the film, getting wild and dangerous as the action unfolds.

Creating a four dimensional space.

One thing I really wanted with this piece as an installation is for an audience to be involved in the film. The way I will achieve this is with surround sound, 360 degree action and the use of physical interactively in the space. Making the viewer feel emotions that lend themselves to the ones the character will be experiencing along with his physical geography. I really want to specifically focus on the movement, water and the visual/sound combination during the storm.

Movement

I aim to make an audience feel as though at sea by having the projected films sway as though at sea, I might potentially do the same thing to the film on the LCD’s if it doesn’t take away quality. I’ll also be careful not to make this too intense so it doesn’t affect an audience more than a visual trick.

(The last thing I want is for people to be sick)

Water

The way I think water will come in handy is through the physical presence of it within the installation, I initially though of water raining onto an audience when the storm picks up on screen, but the thought process is much more ideal than the actuality of it. I chose instead to use a clear flooring with water within it that I can control and light to coincide with the images and feel of the film at any time. Thus creating a more eerie 4D experience.

Visual and Sound

The film will show a viscous storm breaking out, this is when the surround sound and horizon projections will really come into play. As the storm occurs on screen the same will happen on the walls, when lightening strikes on screen one of the walls will flash with a bolt and the sound will boom from that side of the room. This will change with each lightening occurring within the film, so the audience will never know which side of the room will light up and boom. I hope this will make the space feel tense and dangerous, which in turn will hopefully make the action on screen more so.

VFX / SFXThe visual and special effects I use in this piece will all involve the water, weather and environment, most of which will have to be achieved with green screening , but I hope that the use of water within the physical environment of the installation (in the flooring). Will give a more live action feel to the effects taking place during the film.
