DESCRIPTION

Since many learners are already comfortable with emerging technologies and services like Google, Wikipedia, iPods, BlackBerries, Netflix, mashups, Facebook, Twitter, et al. it simply makes sense to include similar technologies and services within one\'s course management system. Learners do expect these things to be an integral part of their learning experiences so they will be pleased to discover that one has spent time, in addition to creating outstanding course content, to learn firsthand what 21st century students are using and to then utilize some of these technologies and services.

Page 26: Creating a Library Presence in ANGEL to Facilitate Discovery and Research

Use Popfly to Create Mashups!

Use a simple point and click interface to combine data and display options.

Or use the advanced programming interface …

Embed Mashups in your courses!

Some Mashup Resources/Ideas

• A Google Search for ‘mashup’ finds only 11,000,000 results! An Amazon.com book search for ‘mashup’ retrieves 1,057 results and more and more titles are coming.

• Programmable Web: http://www.programmableweb.com/

• Yahoo! Pipes: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/

• Mashup Awards: http://mashupawards.com/

• Talis Developer Network suggested using raw materials for library mash ups (e.g., Google Maps, xISBN service etc.): http://www.talis.com/tdn/competition_sources

• Computer Tutorial Videos: http://www.popfly.com/users/chadmairn/Computer%20Tutorial%20Videos

To date, the research tools have been the most valuable to students and faculty.

Some ideas for using Google, Wikipedia, iPods, BlackBerry, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, et al.

• Use Google Docs for collaboration.• Use Wikipedia as a forum for scholarship.• Create virtual tours/tutorials and provide them as

screencasts to be played on iPods and other video MP3 players.

• Point out the PDA Display Mode in ANGEL.• Use Netflix for hard to find films.• Create a library resources/services Facebook presence. • Follow students progress via Twitter.• Pay attention to how successful businesses and media

use these tools and try to modify them for your classes.

Manatee Community College has a “Library Lab” in ANGEL.

Hmmm … SPC’s Library Adjuncts Community Group may be expanded to

included everyone – students and faculty.

Anecdotal Evidence

-- Only a few instructors have “embedded” a librarian, but so far they love the fact that there is someone “present” to help students with their research.

-- Students and faculty love the tools especially the LibX library toolbar, the Desktop Sharing application, and the citation generating tools!

Page 42: Creating a Library Presence in ANGEL to Facilitate Discovery and Research

To do …• Create a more meaningful library presence online and F2F.• Get more librarians involved.• Seamless authentication to library resources in ANGEL. • Schedule and use more video conferences, desktop sharing

sessions and other innovative tools. • Create course-specific library research modules (e.g., TILT) to fit

inside a library community group.• Provide more chances for interaction within our library orientation

video and research modules.• Customized components (e.g., library catalog search widget,

mobile applications to work with Google Android, iPhones).• Conduct a case study.• Promote, promote, and promote!
