Module Goal
School crossing guards will use knowledge of their roles and responsibilities in the performance of their duties.
Objective
Participants will recognize the extent and limits of the responsibilities of a school crossing guard.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Student Safety is First!
• Duty to use safe gaps and create safe gaps.

• You cannot and shall not direct traffic.
• Not your authority to expedite the flow of motor vehicle traffic.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Remind students of :
– Proper crossing techniques
– Proper search pattern of looking left-right-left
– Over one’s shoulder for turning traffic.
• Observe and report conditions or incidents that may create a hazardous situation for pedestrians.
• Serve as a positive role model for children.
• Project a positive public image.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Adult School Crossing Guards are Eyes on the Street for:– Unsafe driver behaviors
– Unsafe pedestrian behaviors
– Unlawful parking
– Construction interfering with safe crossing
– Unsafe street conditions
– Damaged signs
– Poor visibility
– Suspicious activity
– Improper bicycle helmet use

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• School sponsored student volunteers
• Supervised and assigned by school
• Operate under school district policies
• Generally only assigned to school property
• Like adult guards also teach traffic safety
• Adult crossing guards are not responsible for the supervision or assignment of school safety patrol, but should understand how they are being used to enable both groups to operate efficiently and effectively.
