SELF AND SOCIALIZATIONThe understanding of how we are as social being brings about an important point: the concept of self and socialization.

Cooley: Looking-Glass SelfCharles Horton Cooley- advanced the belief that we learn who we are by interacting with others. -The process of developing a self-identity or self-concept has three phases.First- we imagine how we present ourselves to others- to relatives, friends, even strangers on the street.

Second- we imagine how others evaluate us (attractive, intelligent, shy, or strange)Third- we develop some sort of feeling about ourselves, such as respect or shame, as a result of these impressions.A subtle but critical aspect of Cooley’s looking-glass self is that it results from individual’s “imagination” of how others view him or her.

MEAD: STAGES OF THE SELFGeorge Herbert Mead continued Cooley’s exploration theory.

THREE DISTINCT STAGES: 1. The Preparatory stage: children imitate the people around them, especially family members with whom they continually interact.2. The Play Stage : as the children develop skills in communicating through symbols, they gradually become more aware of social relationship.

3. The Game Stage: child has no longer just paly roles but begins to consider several tasks and relationship simultaneously.MEAD: THEORY OF THE SELFYoung children picture themselves as the focus of everything around them and find it difficult to consider the perspectives of others.

ACCOMPLISH:In a whole sheet of short bond paper, write a reflection about your self-concept using either Cooley’s looking-glass or George Herbert Mead’s stages of Self Model.
