By observing and measuring properties of different objects in this lesson you will find that objects in our world have many different characteristics or traits we can describe that will help us classify and identify the best materials for different tasks.  Objects can have properties including size, mass, shape, color, temperature, flexibility and the ability to react with other substances. We observe and measure these properties using tools such as a meter tape, balances and thermometers.

Objective:1.ID properties of objects such as size, mass, shape, color, flexibility and texture2.Notice that many properties can be observed by using our senses(not taste) and tools3.Distinguish properties associated with certain materials making them best suited for certain tasks

Materials Needed:1. Bag of Supplies: Clay, Metal Bolt, Wood Block, Plastic Spoon , Sponge Brush, WhatzIt?, Rock, Mirror2. Recording Sheets3. Lab Analysis Sheet

Page 7: Describing Matter Day 1

Procedure: 1.Each person must complete the descriptions for each of the items in the Supply Bag2.Each member must orally present their description of at least 2 items for the group to give feedback (8 items – each person chooses 2 to present)3.Once every member has presented, the group must sort the materials by placing the names in the items in the appropriate area of the Venn Diagrams4.Each person must then answer the analysis questions based on their observations and organization of information.
