Like any film the costumes play a key role. Within our film we would like to use the conventional techniques to represent the antagonist and the victim. We will use dark colours for the antagonist and lighter colours to be associated with the victim. We will do this through the victim wearing a white t-shirt, connoting innocence to the audience. Juxtaposing the white t-shirt the antagonist will be wearing a black shirt to show the malevolence within the character and the evil connoted from the colour black. The makeup we used within the film was minimal, as we didn’t want to make it to look unrealistic. However, we did use a little fake blood on the victims hand as she has touched her head wound. This is included to show the danger she is in and the reality that the antagonist has hit her. Also, to build the conventional technique of tension, as the audience will see the blood and the suspense will increase as the danger is highlighted.

The props we included within the film were also minimal; the only props we used were the weapon used by the antagonist, and the smashed picture of the girl, which the antagonist picks up. We included this, as we wanted to show the broken element in the girl’s life how her happiness has been shattered into pieces. Also, the weapon being a knife links with the theme within the thriller film of murder, which we wanted to involve in some way.

We chose multiple locations for our thriller opening; half of the film we shot was within a block of flats. This was chosen, as we wanted to include a sense of realism, as the victim is an older teen so the flats would be an appropriate place for her to live. Also, the block of flats creates tension itself, as the audience will presume there are other people in there. This will make them question why no one is there to help. The second location we chose was a wooded park area. We chose this location as it connotes isolation, as no one is around to help therefore creates tension as she is trying to get away and get help.

There are only two characters within our thriller opening sequence. We chose this because we believe to create a conventional effect of a thriller film only two characters are needed.

The first character is the victim, a female young-adult. We chose for our victim to be young as they stereotypically are the victims within thriller films. Also, as a female the audience will recognize her vulnerability compared to the male antagonist. This then creates more tension as she tries to get away from the power, which the male antagonist has over her.

The second character we have chosen to include is an antagonist. This antagonist will be male and unseen from the shoulders up. This will create mystery for the audience and add suspense, as they don’t know what the antagonist looks like. This lets their imagination decide and therefore create a sense of the unknown.

The lighting within the opening of the film plays a key role. Setting the scene within a thriller film the lighting will begin to be bright as she is leaving the flat connoting the escape and therefore happiness. Later the lighting darkens and therefore then connotes the evil and mystery within the thriller film.
