Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) has a developed a program to give Detroit area youth a competitive edge in college and the job market, the High School Computer Compe-tition Camp (HSCC). Students who participate in the program will receive valuable training in leading edge technologies, as well as be given the opportunity to compete against other teams on the national level for college scholar-ships. While learning the principles of being an effective team player, participants will be able to create bonds with other teens from the community who share common goals and in-terests. The program will kick off with local interested students attending the HSCC overview. A short interview will be conducted with each student following the overview. Accepted ap-plicants will be notified by BDPA Detroit within 10 days. Beginning in early February, accepted students will attend weekly sessions to orient them in various computer technologies and program-ming concepts. The 5-hour sessions are infor-mation packed and absences are highly dis-couraged. At the conclusion of the first round of training (late spring), a subset of the students will be selected to receive training in preparation to represent BDPA-Detroit in the National High School Computer Competition, which will be

Black Data Processing Associates (www.bdpa.org) is a national non-profit pro-fessional association founded in 1975 in Phil-adelphia, PA. BDPA has 40 chapters char-tered throughout the nation. Membership is open to all with expressed interest in the information technology industry regardless of race, sex, religious beliefs or national origin. BDPA has successfully reached out to many, and has provided opportunities through networking, educational programs, monthly seminars, monthly workshops, and annual conferences. BDPA’s mission is to be a member-focused organization that exists to provide profes-sional development programs, services and community outreach to position our mem-bers at the forefront of the information technology industry. It is still a sad fact that educational and tech-nical opportunities reach the African Ameri-can community at a slow pace. Recognizing the need for accelerated action BDPA works to increase the number of computer literate teens in the inner-city by offering a challeng-ing, competitive, esteem-building, state-of-the-art program, that will train youth in to-day's technology.

held in conjunction with the National BDPA Conference in late July/early August. These stu-dents will continue weekly training session through the summer. The students will learn to work as a team, develop oral and written com-munication skills and creativity. Training topics include Java programming, Java Server Pages, Structured Query Language, Database Manage-ment Systems, Time Management, Presenta-tion Skills, Converting Specifications to Designs, and more. At the conclusion of the training, these stu-

dents will enjoy an all expense paid trip to the

National Competition and compete with over

20 other teams. They will also participate in

workshops and seminars and meet teens with

similar interests from around the country. They

also have the opportunity to win college schol-

arships from the BDPA National organization.

BDPA HSCC Detroit Q & A

Q: When does the formal training begin?

A: The training begins in early February and meets on each Saturday morning

(likely 9:30 – 2:30).

Q: How long is the program?

A: The training begins in February and continues through May. Students selected

for the competition team will continue through the summer to prepare for

convention in August.

Q: Do I need to already know how to program?

A: The training starts at the beginning and assumes no prior knowledge; however,

prior knowledge is welcomed.

Q: How many absences may I have?

A: The BDPA computer training program moves at a swift pace. Most students

will find it very difficult to “catch-up.” Therefore, absences are strongly

discouraged.

Q: Where will training be held?

A: Most training will occur on-site at the Compuware World Headquarters. There

may also be some teleconferencing for homework assistance.

Q: How much does the program costs?

A: Last year, the participation fee was $50 (primarily to cover the book).

Compuware has generously supported the Detroit team.
