Mission into the Future involves eleven European schools with a common interest in global sustainability. Our large team explored 3 main topics: environment, economics and society through this project. The project started in September 2012 and was completed in July 2014. Throughout the project students were given varied opportunities to develop their knowledge of sustainable energy sources from a European perspective. Through visits to schools and places of cultural and scientific interest in Germany, Greece, Italy, Turkey, UK and Holland our students developed their knowledge of changing societies, economics and technologies.
Our students two year journey was as follows:
Year 1 – What are the causes and impact of global warming? Introduction into the issues surrounding global warming. Exploration of renewable energy sources.Year 2 – What will my future role as a European citizen be? In depth study of the challenges facing each country and the political approach each takes. Each visit incorporated practical activities including scientific research, art and design and physical activity.

MEETING IN ITALY CALVIZZANO 11.11-15.11.2014
Chrissa from Greece
Elif from Turkey
Ricardo from Portugal The trip was full of sightseeing and fun. Fashion show from recycling materials was the bet experience we have had so fr. We will never forget it.
Everyone was very hospitable and the kids welcomed us with a nice song. For me the best activity was the eco fashion show because we made and saw clothes from recycled materials
It was the best trip in my life.
I really enjoyed the exchange/trip to Naples, Italy. It was really fun and educative, we had a good time there. Every day we went sightseeing and somebody there told us the history about the sight.
The meeting in Naples was an amazing experience! My favourite activity was the visit to the Vesuvius Volcano. I think Comenius projects give a lot of opportunities to many students and they open our eyes for things we didn't know before!!
Designing and making the bag from recycled materials was really hard work. I really enjoyed the challenge as it made you think differently about what materials we use and why. The whole experience was really interesting and really fun.
Antonela from Romania Mohammed from Holland
Cerys from the UK
Information about project meetings
Students and staff from the 11 countries met up with each other to study solar power; how it works, its efficiency and the importance of renewable energy. They participated in a demonstration of how to make a solar cooker. Students went back to their own countries and cascaded their knowledge to their peers and as a result every school ran a solar cooker making competition. A visit to the science department was informative and interesting to both staff and students alike.Students were also able to share presentations from each country thus expanding their understanding of the cultural and scientific focus of the project.
Syke, Germany November 2012
Drama, Greece February 2013
In the meeting of the 11 schools in Drama (Greece) three dimensions of sustainability were explored, that is environmental, sociopolitical, and cultural. During the first day, students and teachers visited the Greek school, participated in school lessons and workshops, and watched a presentation about the activities of the following days. Next, the group visited the archaeological amphitheatre of Philippi, discussed about the importance of cultural events in educating citizens, and participated in team building and drama based activities. The following days the focus was equally on advancing the group's understanding of the environmental value of natural resources and on the role that citizens should play in society. Hence, the group visited the cave of Alistrati, walked on the riverside, played several environmental games, discussed about the ecological footprint, and visited a museum of natural history. Finally, the group had the opportunity to visit the social solidarity clinic – a self-organised initiative that provides health care to the poor and resists on governmental policies that harm the vulnerable groups - and discuss about the financial crisis and its impact on lay citizens.
Liverpool, UK April 2013 During the stay in Liverpool the focus was Wind Power as a renewable source of
energy. The group visited Crosby Marina where they shared presentations about sustainable power, took part in sailing activity, flew handmade kites and were able to see real Wind farms out at sea. The operations manager from Peel Energy LTD gave a presentation to the group about the wind farms that could be seen at Crosby. He also showed a live link up to one of the turbines so the group could see how much energy was being generated. Each country also presented a PowerPoint presentation on the positives and negatives of renewable energy. The trip also included a ferry trip, making and building kites which were flown on the beach and a sailing lesson. Real science lessons were observed by the visiting teachers whilst the students took part in practical lessons involving team building through sport and hand building kites in an art lesson.
Naples, Italy November 2013
This meeting looked at recycling, in particular recycled art and fashion. During the trip all of the students took part in an Eco-Fashion Show where they exhibited their recycled fashion pieces they had made in their own schools. During the visit students investigated how recycling is a global concern and should be tackled globally as well as at an individual country level. The study visits also included a visit to the hosting school – Marco Polo, Vesuvius Volcano, Herculaneum ruins and Pozzuoli, Solfatara which is a volcanic crater which emits jets of steam to look at the effects of the natural world and changing face of the environment. These visits helped the students to contextualise and understand their place in an ever changing global landscape.
Amsterdam, Netherlands February 2014
This project meeting was designed to look at the social and economic effects of global warming and environmental issues. The group took part in a European Parliament debate, where each country had to come up with their own point of view on a hypothetical situation to do with drilling in the Mediterranean Sea for oil. The trip also included a visit into Amsterdam, a visit to the Nemo Science Museum and a visit to a windmill. The students were also able to take part in a cycle ride demonstrating the efficiency and benefits of using travelling using their own energy!!
Istanbul, Turkey March 2014
Our final visit to Turkey allowed the 11 partner schools to bring together and share the knowledge and learning that had evolved throughout the two year journey. The programme involved a great mix of activities that gave both an insight into the Turkish culture as well as an in depth exploration of some of the key ways in which organisations in Istanbul are promoting the use of renewable energy.
Visits included:
ITU Energy Laboratories and Santral Istanbul Energy Museum. Students enjoyed a presentation from the university team who make soar powered cars and have enjoyed winning a number of worldwide competitions over the years. They were then able to visit the actual workshops where the cars were made and could see the inner workings of one of the cars. Students also explored the science museum, trying out the interactive displays that demonstrated how energy can be generated and harnessed. They then went on to a workshop, where they made a solar powered insect of their own. An exhibition was mounted of the student posters from each country showing an aspect of sustainability and the winners were chosen.
