•  Theresultsofyourchild’sassessmentonthestateassessmenttool,theArizonaEnglishLanguageLearnerAssessment(AZELLA),areusedtodeterminewhetherthechildwouldbenefitfromservicesprovidedthroughthedistrict’sELDprogram.

•  AparentnoAficaAonandconsentformwillbesenthomewithstudentswhoqualify.

Placement

•  OncethenoAficaAonandconsentformaresigned,thestudentisplacedintheELLProgram.

Transcripts

• WhennewstudentsarriveintheUSA,thecounselor&ELLinstructorevaluatespriorrecordstodeterminewhichcoursestransfer.

• ThedeterminaAonincludesseatAme&standardalignment(thiscanbealimitaAontoacceptedcourses).• Parentsandthestudentareinvolvedinthisprocess,andtypicallythemulAlingualELLinstructortranslates.

InternaAonalStudents

•  Iftranscriptsareunavailable,severalvariablesareaddressedbuttypicallythestudentwillbeplacedinELLcoursesfor4periodsaday.

ReflecAon

•  I’vealwaysbeeninterestedinmulA‐minoritystudents(typicallyGLBT,Gibed,etc…)butthroughthisworkandmyinterviewswithillegalimmigrants(broughthereassmallchildren),IhavediscoveredmyiniAalimpressionsofELLwasmisfoundedandIreallyneedtoreflectonmyformerlyignorant‐stereotypicalperspecAveofsomeofourstudents.
