The goal of the GST BOCES Elmira Literacy Zone, located at the Elmira Economic Opportunity Program, is to help families and individuals, in the 14901 zip code, become better educated, employed and self-sufficient by providing comprehensive case management services, as well as to help improve the relationships with parents and their child's school. At the Elmira Literacy Zone we have: The Creativity Zone for parents and school-aged children, Hands-On Art with Creative Writing for Adults, A Book on Every Bed and much more!

A mural was painted in downtown Elmira to promote family literacy and to give back to our community. Literacy Zone staff and students joined together to lend a hand painting. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony October 15, 2013 GST BOCES Adult Literacy staff, students and representatives from the City of Elmira and the Arts Council gathered at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Elmira, NY. 6. Outlines were drawn by GST BOCES staff onto the background. 7. Adult Literacy students helped with the painting after the outlines were drawn. 8. Adult Literacy students created leaves with sponges and paint. 9. Adult Literacy staff and students worked together to add details to the bookshelves, leaves and grass. 10. Families created Rose Bookmarks after reading A Giant Crush by by Gennifer Choldenko. 21. Hands-On Art with Creative Writing is available to adults in the 14901 zip code. Students can explore their creative side with a variety of art mediums. Creative writing includes poetry, short stories and essays. 22. Throughout my life, I had all these struggles. All the responsibilities, I had to juggle. That part of me, I never knew existed, I never knew my son was with us. Went back to school, to get a job. They all called me: a stupid, slob. But I got through it, for my boy, So I could get all his favorite toys. He grew up, to be like me. Only the best parts, thankfully. Original Artwork & Poetry 23. Parents find a favorite book for their child or children and wrap it. After children have fallen asleep on Christmas Eve or any winter holiday, parents place the gift-wrapped book at the bottom of their bed. Children will awaken to find a present they can open right away, beginning a special reading tradition they will love.
