Types of Employment
• Employer - A person or organisation who employs workers under a contract of employment. Employers exercise some control over their workers and are responsible for the payment of wages or salaries and for providing a safe working environment.
• Employee - A person working under the control or direction of another, according to a contract of employment and in return for a wage or salary.

Changing Work Patterns• Due to global forces the nature
of work patterns are changing for Australian workers
• rapid growth of outsourcing, changes to work hours, the change in jobs throughout a career and a reduction of full time workers are some of the changes
• Demographic Changes - increase in women working, retirement age will change from 65 to 67
• Casualisation - increase to the amount of these workers
• Technological change - people working from home, technology replacing humans
• Flexible working conditions
Benefits of Education and Training for Employment
• A love of learning develops stronger skills and greater prospects of job opportunities
• A multi skilled worker will also have the ability to adapt to a changing jobs market
Types of Employment Contracts
• Both employer and employee are bound by an employment contract
• It is important to remember that once you accept the contract you may be bound to certain working conditions
Award
• An award outlines the minimum conditions for workers in a particular industry
• Some employers will pay above the award to keep their workers compared to their competitors
Enterprise Agreement
• Negotiation between employee and employer to decide an agreed contract of work and pay conditions
• Enterprise Agreements can be arranged through the assistance of a union/federation
Individual Workplace Agreement
• These agreements are done on a one to one basis and can often be a secret between the boss and the worker
• There is a potential threat to job security and entitlements of workers under this arrangement
Common Law Agreements
• Agreements not done under a contract but both employer and employee have rights under common law if one party does not follow procedures
Unemployment• Cyclical Unemployment
• When there is not enough aggregate demand in the economy to provide jobs for everyone who wants to work
• Frictional Unemployment
• The time period between jobs when a worker is searching for or transitioning from one job to another
• Structural Unemployment
• focuses on the structural problems within an economy and inefficiencies in labor markets.
