Scenario
• 2 Schools:Computer Science Engineering &
Technology• 600 first year students
need induction at start of term
ProblemTimetable didn’t allow dividing students into groups of 30 for ‘KnowHow’ tours and sessions
Solution• Both Schools have a
compulsory level 4 skills module
• Offered to take part in lecture at beginning of term just before 1ST assignment
• Given whole hour!
• Decided to use EVS as all students issued with ‘clickers’ as part of Learning and Teaching Strategy
Issues• Last year at first lecture
EVS crashed• This was due to
hypertext links in my slides
• Last year used separate PC for questions and laptop for slides
• This year removed links and did live demo separately

Outcome• The questions were a
break from my talk!• The students seemed to
like the competitive element
• They got used to using EVS in a formative way
• Tricky bringing them back after each question
• Next year will reduce number of questions
