IDEO Design Thinking

• brings together what is desirable from a human point of view with what is technologically feasible and economically viable.

• a deeply human process that taps into abilities we all have but get overlooked by more conventional problem-solving practices.

Lessons Learned - Planning

• Strong Sponsor buy-in = addressing “real” needs

• Be very clear about the purpose and goal (e.g. Design Studio: Learning and Technology)

• Have enough facilitators (1:4 ratio in SET vs. 1:70 ratio in Tianjin)

• Ongoing mentorship is important

Page 12: ETUG spring workshop 2014: Design studio presentation

Lessons Learned - Facilitation• Balance between achieving the goal

and being completely open• Give plenty of space for participants

to experiment• Facilitator becomes a member of the

team during Stage 4: experimentation• Invite sponsor to be part of the

workshop (e.g. SET hosted two synchronous sessions)

Measuring Success

• Evidence of sustainable innovations• Participant feedback

Feedback

The Design Thinking Model as a framework for the course helped me to explore my challenge, articulate what I needed, experiment with some ideas and resources, and get a good start on a product.

...gave me the motivation to work through something I have been thinking about for a while.

An excellent learning opportunity!

Appreciated having choice about what to focus on.

It looks as though there were some very positive outcomes from the session and we hope it sparked an interest for the participants to explore more tools that they can use in their course delivery. from program head
