KEY MOMENTS FROM THE FILM (THAT DO NOT GIVE AWAY CRUCIAL PLOT DETAILS), SHOWN OUT OF SEQUENCE

I included this convention as it provides a greater sense of mystery/enigma for

the story. The viewer knows what is going on, but doesn’t know what

happens when etc (to find out, they will have to go see the movie!)

THE MOVIE’S DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER, LISTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRAILER (SOMETIMES WITH PAST WORK)

DIRECTOR OF INCEPTION, SHOWN AT POINTS 0:24 AND 0:27 (OUT OF 2:23)

THE MOVIE’S DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER, LISTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE TRAILER (SOMETIMES WITH PAST WORK)

I included this convention as it promotes the film more –

some viewers are only interested in a movie for its

stars or who directs/writes it

THE MOVIE’S MAIN STARS, LISTED AT THE BEGINNING OR END OF THE TRAILER

STARS OF GANGSTER SQUAD, LISTED FROM POINT 2:06 TO

2:12 (OUT OF 2:32)

I did not include this convention, as I thought it would not fit the

trailer’s structure – I did not want it at the beginning, middle or end, so I didn’t include it at

all

ON-SCREEN TEXT (SUCH AS THE MOVIE’S TAG-LINE OR RELEASE DATE)

I included this convention as it generates excitement and helps

build to a climax within the trailer. It also reinforces the noir/action

style of the film

I included this convention as it generates excitement and helps

build to a climax within the trailer.

SLOW-MOTION VISUALS, SUGGESTING ACTION SCENES WILL BE EXCITING AND SPECTACULAR

I included this convention as it emphasises the spectacle of the

action – it makes it more exciting and thrilling

COMMON IMAGES AND DETAILS INCLUDING CIGARETTE SMOKE, GUNS, FAST CARS, BEAUTIFUL WOMEN, GANGSTERS, CITYSCAPE ETC.

SHOTS FROM BLADE RUNNER TRAILER

I did not include all these elements (you would not find shots of a car, gun,

cityscape etc in my trailer) as I preferred to focus more

on plot and characters rather than imagery

Page 32: Evaluation Question 1

HOW MIGHT YOUR USE OF CONVENTIONS ATTRACT/APPEAL TO AN AUDIENCE?

My use of conventions might attract an audience as it:

• Focuses heavily on action and violence (common action/thriller movie conventions) which may attract fans of those sorts of films

• Follows common noir storylines/narratives and includes similar types of characters which could attract enthusiasts of those sorts of stories

• Includes a mystery/enigma element (common noir movie traits) which could attract people who are curious as to what the mystery is

• Focuses heavily on the main stars of the movie – Some audience members are only attracted by who is starring in the film, directing the film etc

• Could remind viewers of other popular noir films such as Taxi Driver or Drive, which may lead them to see the movie to compare

Page 33: Evaluation Question 1

HAVE YOU ADAPTED ANY CONVENTIONS ON ANY OF YOUR THREE PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY?

I have adapted the following conventions for my production pieces:

• Exclusion of the noir character type of ‘femme-fatale’/’love interest’ – I instead included a ‘brother’ character to make the story more personal

• For the poster, I chose to shade my characters in a cartoony black and white colour rather than present them in the usual fully-coloured style – I did this to make it look like an old newspaper, photograph or comic book

• I chose to colour my Magazine Cover silver-grey instead of the usual colourful shades used for movie magazines as it follows the black/white style I was employing for the other two production pieces
