Ua Ao Hawai‘iWords by Larry Kimura Chant melody by Kalena Silva

Kau e ka wena o ke ao i ka laniThe announcement of dawn appears as a glowing streak

upon the heavens,

He wekeweke i ka pö pilipukaIt is a narrow opening in the darkness heralding the day,

He ‘elele o ka poniponi hikinaIt is a messenger of purple glimmer from the east.

Kau ke kähe‘a wana‘ao i ka ‘äla‘apapaStreaks of red stain long cloud formations,

La‘i ana i luna o ke kükulu o ka lani läReposing serenely upon the pillars holding up the heavens;

‘O ka‘u ia e huli alo nei i ka ulu ëI turn to gaze upon this, focusing on growth and the rising of

a new day,

‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.

Hö mai lä kö mälamalamaBestow upon us your radiant light

I ka honua nei i ka mauli olaHere upon the earth, filled with the spirit of life.

Ua ao Hawai‘i ke ‘ölino neiHawai‘i is in the brightness of day, it shines, brilliant

Mai ka pi‘ina a ka welona a ka läFrom its boundaries from the east to the west.

Kähiko ‘ia i ka ‘ike manomanoIt wears as its finery a myriad of knowledge,

Ka ‘ike köli‘u mai o kikilo maiOf deep insight from the depths of antiquity.

‘O ka‘u nö ia ‘o ka pülamaMy sole duty is to embrace and to cherish,

A pa‘a ma ka ipu o ka ‘ike ë.So it may be firm in the repositories of enlightenment.

‘Ae, ua ao ë.Yes, day has arrived.

He mele no Hawai‘i ua ao.This is a poem for Hawai‘i which has seen the light of day.

Keynote AddressRobert K. Iopa, the Big Island-born architect who designed the College of Hawaiian Language

and College of Pharmacy Buildings at UH Hilo will give the keynote address at this year’s fall

commencement.Iopa currently serves as president and principal of WCIT Architecture on O‘ahu,

a start-up group he founded in 2000. Specializing in planning, entitlements and design, Iopa

maintains a lead role in all of the firm’s projects and heads the design effort for over a dozen projects

in Hawai‘i. His design for the College of Pharmacy Building was recently featured in Honolulu

Magazine, while his plans for the College of Hawaiian Language Building captured the “2010

American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honolulu Design Award,” in the category of “Commissioned

Work to be Built.” Both projects reflect his philosophical approach, which strives to create uniquely

special places and environments rooted in the Hawaiian way of life and sustainability.

Other current work includes the International Marketplace, the Princess Kaiulani Hotel

Redevelopment, and master planning efforts for the Turtle Bay Resort, Makena and Hanalei

Plantations. His notable completed projects include the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean, Honua Kai

and Royal Lahaina Resorts; Ritz Carlton Kapalua Bay Club & Residence and Royal Hawaiian Hotel

historic renovation.

In addition to Hawai‘i, Iopa has led and participated in the development of projects throughout Asia,

South America and the South Pacific. His work has earned him numerous awards and recognition,

including being named one of Hawai‘i’s brightest young leaders (40 under 40) by Pacific Business

News, one of the State’s most Influential Leaders for the Next Twenty-Five Years (25 for the next 25)

by Hawai‘i Business Magazine and the 2008 SBA Business Person of the Year for the City and County

of Honolulu.

Student AddressClinton K.V. Tavai, affectionately known as “Kahökü,” represents the graduating class as student

speaker. Tavai has maintained a 3.28 GPA majoring in Hawaiian Studies and Communication.

Tavai’s campus and community service activities reflect his values rooted in the Hawaiian culture

and language, which he credits with helping him grow extensively as a humble individual. He

participated in the restoration of the Hale O Lono fishpond in Keaukaha, along with the UH Hilo

Hawaiian Club/Kipuka Mala and Waipi‘o clean-ups, and assisted the Kamehameha Schools Teacher

Induction Program and Kele Kanahele: Master Ni‘ihau shell maker.

His commencement speech, to be delivered in both Hawaiian and English, will entail a brief history

of the Hawaiian language and cultural struggles from which he will draw a parallel to his own

personal trials and college as a whole.

Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh,say,doesthatStar‐SpangledBanneryetwave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
