Purpose of film openings

1. To introduce locations, main characters and to establish the genre of the film.

2. A way of displaying the credits during the film.

3. To give the audience an insight into what the story is going t be about.

Conventions of film openings1. They must show a location that can be identified by the audience e.g. Eiffel Tower represents Paris.

2. It should show the main characters.

3. It should let the audience know what genre the film is.

4. It should have the name of the director and production company.

5. It must attract the audiences attention to keep them interested.

6. It should have the main credits e.g. actors names.

Dawn of the Dead This opening sequence has some of the conventions needed to make a good opening sequence like it shows the main antagonist which in this film is the zombie. It lets the audience know what genre it is by the text written in blood then splattered across the shot, also by the bloody people and the sounds used are loud and sudden.

Casino RoyaleThis sequence shows that the film may be set in a casino at some point. It also shows that the genre of the film is action adventure from the guns and fighting. The main actors and actresses names are displayed around the imagery and is easy to read. The action and music attracts the audiences attention immediately.
