UPDATE FLASHFollow these instructions for updating Flash within the DOE

(the standard web update installer is blocked by the DOE firewall)

PREFACEThe standard, web-based, Flash updater is a small file that the DOE firewall blocks from the final step of updating. The following is the work-around for updating Flash within the DOE

network



STEP 1AWether your browser attempts to update Flash automatically, or

you search for the downloader, you’ll end up here...



STEP 1BFind the “Do you have a different operating system of browser?” link,

regardless of what operating system or browser you are using



STEP 2On the next page, look in the bottom left and find the “click here” link for older versions of Flash - do this regardless of what browser or system you are using



STEP 3After you “click for older versions” this pop-up will appear. Click

“Flash Player archives” or scroll down



STEP 4Find the most recent version, first in the list. The file contains

both Mac & PC installers and is usually over 150 MB



STEP 5After you click on the most recent version it will download a

ZIP file to your Downloads folder



STEP 6Find the .zip file and double click in it. It will create a folder,

directly above it, with the same name



STEP 7AClick the “fp_VERSION#_archive” folder and navigate to the

format you need



STEP 7BOn a Windows machine double-click the file ending in “_win.exe” to launch the installer - be sure to quite all open browsers before you run

STEP 7COn a Mac double-click the file ending in “_mac.dmg” to launch the

installer - be sure to quite all open browsers before you run the installer



STEP 8On a Mac, the “_mac.dmg” file will open up to this “Install

Adobe Flash Player” folder



STEP 9Control-Click on the folder to see the menu then click on

“Show Package Contents”



STEP 10Click the Contents folder, then Resources. The installer package

will be at the top - Adobe Flash Player.pkg



STEP 11Double-click the Adobe Flash Player.pkg file to run the

installer - be sure to quite all open browsers before you run the installer



IF YOU MANAGE MORE THAN ONE MACYou can update multiple Macs simultaneously once you have

updated your main system. Open Apple Remote Desktop



REMOTE MACS - STEP 1In Apple Remote Desktop select the remote machine(s) you want to

update & click the Install Package icon (or Manage->Install Packages from the menu bar)



STEP 2Use the + to find the .pkg file, or simple drag it from your Finder to this window.

Choose Force an immediate restartClick the blue “Install” button in the bottom right of the window



STEP 3You can monitor the install progress.

In a hard-wired lab ~10 at a time works quickly, more than that & install lags or failsFor remote systems on wifi it is not recommended to do more than 1 or 2 at a time



FINAL NOTE 1It is recommended you reboot both Macs and PCs immediately after the installer is run.Also, Adobe has been known to update Flash 2x a month so be aware you might have

to do this process frequently



FINAL NOTE 2When possible, use Google’s Chrome browser. Chrome is able to

update Flash automatically, without being blocked by the DOE. Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer require this work-around
