Talk It Out!: Let’s complete the sentences below.
Unit 8: Compound Sentences
We can combine 2 or more simple sentences into one longer,
more interesting sentence. We call this sentence a compound sentence.

Ana is sad…
…for his grandparents gave him a gift.
The mom is angry…
…and she still needs to study for the test.
We use words to combine sentences. We call those words
conjunctions.

Grammar Rule #1: Here are some grammar rulesfor you. Let’s talk about COMPOUND SENTENCES.
Here are the conjunctions for COMPOUND SENTENCES:
For: used to state the reason
Andrew did not feed it.
The dog is angry.
The dog is angry, for Andrew did not feed it.
The dog is angry, for Andrew did not feed it.
But: used to add a contrasting idea
He did not sleep.
Gail went to bed.
Gail went to bed, but he did not sleep.
Gail went to bed, but he did not sleep.
Yet: same as but
His favorite sport is boxing.
Robin plays basketball.
Robin plays basketball, yet his favorite sport is boxing.
Robin plays basketball, yet his favorite sport is boxing.
Don’t forget to use a comma (,) before the conjunction.

And: used to add an idea
She shouted.
Kendra saw a mouse.
Kendra saw a mouse, and she shouted.
Kendra saw a mouse, and she shouted.
Or: used to add a choice or choices
You can fail.
You study hard for this exam.
You study hard for this exam, or you can fail.
You study hard for this exam, or you can fail.
Nor: means “and not”
He cannot play golf.
David can’t play bowling.
David can’t play bowling, nor can he play golf.
David can’t play bowling, nor can he play golf.
So: means “therefore”
Mr. White went camping.
The weather was nice.
The weather was nice, so Mr. White went camping.
The weather was nice, so Mr. White went camping.
Now give me one sentence using one conjunction.
