• 4 – Competent analysis of ideas, relevant reasons, adequately organized, satisfactory control of sentence structure, some usage errors

• 3 – Some competence though flawed in one or more of the following:  limited analysis or development, weak organization or control of sentence structure, usage errors that result in vagueness

• 2 – Serious weakness in at least one of the following:  lack of analysis, development, or organization, serious problems in sentence structure, usage errors obscure meaning

• 1 – Fundamental deficiencies:  content that is confusing or irrelevant, little or no development, pervasive errors that result in incoherence

When is the GRE Test held? All-round-the-year

The test is administered in the Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Trivandrum

Registering at least 15 days in advance is mandatory.

Eligibility• Anyone and everyone is eligible for taking

the GRE Test - there are no restrictions based on age.

• The test scores are valid for five years, i.e., most universities accept scores up to five years old. But it is always better if your scores are recent (not older than 2 years).

GRE Exam Fee• Test fees for GRE Test may vary according to the

country in which you take the test. In India, this fee is US $140 (approx Rs. 7000), payable at the time of registration.

• You cannot pay in Indian Rupees. • Alternately, the payment can also be made

through a credit card which has global acceptance.

How to Apply? • Registering by Phone: You may call up Prometric Delhi

office until 12:00 noon to register. Make sure to call at least THREE BUSINESS DAYS before the test date.

• Registering Online: You may now also register only from the GRE site: www.gre.org.

• Registering by Fax: If registering by fax, you must send your fax at lest SEVEN DAYS prior to your first choice of a test day.

• Registering by Mail/Courier.

Accreditation Importance of Accreditation :

Ensures that universities meet minimum standards.Helps in case the student wishes a transfer to another university.

It is advisable to apply to only accredited universities.

Semesters

Top US universities offer two main semester intakes:

Fall Semester (September/October):This is the main intake and almost all programs are offered at this times. More financial aid is also available for this semester and as funds are allocated for the entire year during this time.

Spring Semester (January/February):This is the mid-year intake. There is limited financial assistance available for this semester as most universities allocate funds to projects in the Fall semester. Some universities also have a Summer intake around July.

Who Should Apply? • show evidence of a high level of academic achievement

• achieve high Standardized Examination scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL etc.)

• demonstrate financial need but have private funding to cover some of the cost. Financial need is not crucial for some awards.

• enroll in a field or have teaching experience in a subject offered at the undergraduate level (to increase opportunities for a teaching assistantship)

• specialize in a field or have a research interest which parallels that of the department and faculty or private funding source (which increases opportunities for research assistantships and grants)

• have outstanding letter(s) of recommendation and an impressive statement of purpose.

• send a sample of professional writing, published or otherwise.
