Photographs/Videos for your presentation

Page 2: Group Project by S.B

An introduction…

Now that everyone knows what this group project is all about, let’s break down the pieces of the project so we are all on the same page. As mentioned, a different part of the project will be due every week to ensure that everyone is keeping up. This is part 1.1. Remember there are three parts to this project, each having 3 sub-parts within them. (1.1,1.2,1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3)

What is 1.1?

For this part of the project, you will need to find photos/videos to support your particular subject matter. I have you do this part first so you can become more stimulated by the topic and feel a connection to it. Remember, you will be using these photos/videos in your final presentation so choose them appropriately.

The Guidelines…

Here are the guidelines for this part of your project. At the end of this presentation we will look at an example that I have created so you know what I am looking for.

1. Your photos/videos must be related to your group’s topic

2. You must have at least 15 photos or videos (or a combination of the two) to support your topic

3. You must put them into a PowerPoint presentation and give a description of how you might use them based on the guidelines of the project

4. You must use photos from Flickr.com and use photos that have Creative Commons licensing (see instructions)

Using Flickr.com and Creative Commons

As stated in the guidelines for this part of your project, you must use Flickr.com for your photos and you must use photos that have licensing by Creative Commons. Firstly, let’s look at what Creative Commons is:

Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright.

Using Flickr.com and Creative Commons Continued

When you are on Flickr.com, here is what you will need to do in order to find photos/videos with the proper licensing:

1. Go to the Flickr.com website and click on the search button

2. Click on the advanced search button3. Fill in the appropriate information and the topic you are

searching for4. Click on “Only search within Creative Commons-

licensed content5. Make sure to note what kind of citation is needed by

looking at the bottom of the photos

Why do I need to cite?

You may be wondering why I am having you use Flickr.com and using photos/videos that are licensed by Creative Commons only. This is because I want to make sure that we are all practicing Fair Use. Fair Use is the right to use copyrighted material, under particular circumstances, without permission from the person who created the material. Creative Commons allows people to use copyrighted material with limited restrictions to help us all learn from each other without getting bogged down with legalities. Want to learn more? What should part 1.1 look like?

Here is an example of basically what I am looking for in part 1.1 of your project.

Please note that I have not included 15 photos/videos but you must have at least that many in your projects.

Please also note that for this example, the topic for my hypothetical project would be Animals.

We would use this photo as an example of one of our 10 animals. We would explain attributes of cats and any cultural contexts that deal with cats in the U.S.

We would use this as another example of our 10 animals. We would discuss what cows eat and what they are used for in terms of consumption.Photo from: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aasgier/489526907/sizes/l/

For this photo, we would discuss how dogs contribute to US society. We would also use this time to talk about some personal experiences with dogs of our own.

Your slides would continue like this and you would end up with 15 total pictures and/or videos. Please make sure that you include an explanation of how you will use the photo/video in the final project and please also include your sources from Flickr.com.
