Thematic Lesson Plan Prepared by Ercan AksoyLecturer: Dorothy Mayne

What is concept or language area in my lesson plans?Grammar-based teaching

If we believe eclectic approach, we should NOT ignore grammar!Integrated Skills

Listening and SpeakingReading and Writing

Grammar?

HOW?

Give examples using the theme.1. Lesson Plan: Give short information about the mine accident by using relative clause. (Ex. In Soma, coal miners passed away sadly. And, we need a lot of people who help and pray for them). Provide to remember their background knowledge about target concepts. (Ex. We use who with animate things). 2. Lesson Plan: Ex. Jupiter is larger than Saturn. Uranus is cooler that Saturn. We add -er by comparing with monosyllabic adjectives.3. Lesson Plan: Little Mustafa commenced his education in Hafiz Mehmet Efendi's neighbourhood school. We add -ed while we use a regular verb in past tense and if it is irregular verbs, we use past form.

Teacher uses basic English while giving these clues and he/she generally demonstrates on the example.

The First 10 15 mins of 1. LessonIn my lesson plans, they generally watch the video at first 10 15 mins. WHY?Do you remember the Multiple Intelligence Theory?

Provides positive attitudes to English for them

Not only one intelligence but also at least two or three intelligences! 1. Lesson plan: (Implicit Inference)What do you think about their feelings?2. Lesson plan: (Given knowledge)What do you know about the solar system? Is there any water on the surface of Mars?3. Lesson plan: (Note-taking tecnique)Ask them to note down while listening the video

The Last 20 mins of 1. LessonWhy do I use group-work at last 20 mins of 1. Lesson? Competition or Cooperation? Multiple Intelligence Theory?

(It provides to base on integrated skills because they both listen and read quite a few materials to reach the information).

Raz, S.(2014, as cited from Krashen) said that we should free our students. They can read calender page, newspaper clipping, etc. According to me, competition is used if it is suitable in terms of theme or language area.

2. LessonIt is time to start their presentation Each group has limited time to present their own studies. WHY? Learning the importance of time-management!They give themselves a point from 5 to 1 for their own participation in group studies. WHY?Provides to increase self-assessment !

Thanks for listening
