Social Network

A social structure made of nodes that are generally individuals or organizations. A social network represents relationships and flows between people, groups, organizations, animals, computers or other information/knowledge processing entities.

(The term itself was coined in 1954 by J. A. Barnes. )

Social Networking Site (SNS)

Abbreviated as SNS a social networking site is the phrase used to describe any Web site that enables users to create public profiles within that Web site and form relationships with other users of the same Web site who access their profile. Social networking sites can be used to describe community-based Web sites, online discussions forums, chatrooms and other social spaces online.

Social Networking Services• Focus on building online communities of people

– share interests and activities

• Provide a variety of ways for users to interact– such as e-mail and instant messaging

• Users can:– upload a picture of themselves– create their 'profile' – can often be "friends" with other users
