Whether as future dog owners or not, they live inor go back to communities where the issues ofirresponsible dog ownership, 'status dogs', dogabandonment and antisocial behaviour with dogsare rife At high risk of being engaged in offendingconduct involving dogs. 6. Influences young offenders attitude towardsdogs in the future Improve youths understanding of dog care andthe responsibilities of dog ownership Increases youths empathy and respect of allliving beings - human and animal. 7. Increases educational engagement and overallprogress in literacy, numeracy, communication,group work etc. Improves their behaviour and employability skills Aids their personal development and self-esteem Helps reduce reoffending. 8. Flexible programmes of workshops or stand alonelessons in secure establishments 1:1 sessions for young people on communityorders Small group workshops for offenders on ordersand youths at risk of offending Peer Mentoring scheme Paid apprenticeships (dog related or communityrelated) All completely FREE to prisons and Councils. 9. Dogs are used to work with the youths to offer atruly interactive, engaging learning experience Responsible dog ownership messages are usedto discuss: personal responsibility and self-worth consequences commitment respect empathy and compassion anger management. 10. Fun, interactive sessions tailored to the needs and levelof the young people Short, practical activities: Sorting cards Worksheets Quizzes Video clips Hands on tasks (e.g. making dog treats, art project) All activities offer quick wins, providing a sense ofachievement. 11. What are young ppeeooppllee ssaayyiinngg aabboouutt iitt??Theres been interestingand different things to doon the course.I wasnt interested in dogsbefore but Ive learnt a lotabout dogs and dogculture.The staff wereinvolved andit was a laugh. 24.
