Learner Centred Environment
What is ICT
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
is now playing an important role for the
dissemination of sustainable quality education
worldwide (Pal & Panigrahi, 2013)
ICT is defined as a diverse set of technological
tools and resources used to communicate, create,
disseminate, store, and manage information.
These technologies include computers, the
Internet, broadcasting technologies (radio and
television), and telephone
(Blurton, 2002)
Strengths of ICT in Education
Individualization of learning
Interactivity
Low per unit cost
Distance and climate insensitive
Can serve multiple teaching functions and
diverse audiences
High speed delivery, wide reach at low cost
Uniform quality
Weaknesses of ICT in Education High infrastructure and start up costs
Tend toward centralized uniform content in
economies of scale
Are not ideally location and problem sensitive
Problems of reach, access, remain
Tend to create new class of knowledge
rich/knowledge poor
Essentially delivery systems
Hard to assess impact
Officers, trainers need reorientation and retraining
Call for attitudinal change to understanding of
teaching and learning
Challenges of ICT in Education
Inadequate resources from
the government for ICT
Limited teachers’
technological knowledge
Limited teachers knowledge
of integrating technology in
teaching
The curriculum
Teachers attitudes
Absences of Electricity in
some schools
Lack of internet connection
