Instructional Design Project
Amanda Baker
Wasted Time
Frustrated Off-Task Students
Frustrated Overwhelmed Teachers
What is the solution?
Organization
The instruction described in the following project was specifically designed for use at
the Donegal High School in the Donegal School District in Mount Joy, Pa.
Problem
Instructional time is wasted during activities utilizing laptops because students
do not know how to correct common technology errors.
Need
Students need direct instruction of troubleshooting strategies.
Goal
When experiencing log in or network connectivity problems, the learners will be able to diagnose and implement solutions
to the problems without teacher intervention.
Objective of Instruction
Given a content area classroom of varying grade levels equipped with a Windows
based laptop cart of 30 wireless laptops, learners will diagnose and implement
solutions to basic connectivity and login problems without teacher intervention in
order to maximize classroom productivity.
The LearnerDescription
The target population
• 9th graders • Varying ability levels and access to
technology• A survey of students will be given to
determine prior knowledge and ability level.
The Learner Entry Skills
• Learners will be able to apply basic computer vocabulary in authentic situations.
• Learners will be able to control the computer through manipulation of accessories (i.e. mouse and keyboard).
• Learners will be able to control computer through application of basic computer functions such as power button and start menu.
The Learner Entry Skills
Entry Skills will be verified by the Technology Experience Survey.
Training Program
• 7 consecutive sessions • Classroom equipped with Windows based
wireless laptops, laptop equipped with ActivInspire software, projector and Promethean Board
• Media will include paper handouts and organizers as well as Flipchart versions projected onto the Promethean Board.
Training Program
Learners will be grouped by grade. Groups will include various ability levels across the
9th grade.
Learners will be positioned in rows facing the board with at least one learner on
either side for collaboration.
Training Program Pretest

Training Program Instructional Sequence
Cluster Subordinate Skills Object ives 1 1.Given an error message
or lack of network connectivity on a windows based wireless laptop, learners will accurately identify the presence of an error.
1. Given a screenshot of a computer at various stages of performance or lack of performance due to error, identify presence of an error.
1.1 Assign error category as login or connectivity
1.1 Given an error message or lack of network connectivity on a laptop, learners will assign an error category to the issue as login or connectivity.
Training ProgramInstructional Strategy Cluster 1: Error Items 1. Identifying the presence of an error 2. Identify the features of the different
error items 3. Define error based on knowledge of
features

troubleshooting strategy for error item
2. Given common troubleshooting strategies provided by instructor in list format, learners will select one strategy that matches the error item.
2.1 Define steps of basic troubleshooting strategy
2.1 Given computer error, learners will define basic trouble shooting strategies by listing steps included in strategy execution.
3 Apply one strategy
3 Given common troubleshooting strategies, learners will apply the selected strategy to the error to restore computer productivity.
4 Verify functional network connection or login procedure
4 Given a laptop and potential error messages or network status, learners will decide if strategy is successful by verifying a functional network connection.
4.1 Apply new common troubleshooting strategy
4.1 Given a laptop and potential error messages or network status, learners will apply new selected strategy to the error to restore computer productivity.

TransferMemory Aid • Complete graphic organizer
Transfer • Use of troubleshooting strategies
during classroom activities in classrooms of varying grade level and content areas.
Where are we now? • Formative evaluations conducted • One to One • Subject Matter Expert• Learner
• Small Group
• Resulting changes have been implemented
Where do we go from here?
• Field trial • Summative Evaluation
• Cooperation of Classrooms for the Future Teachers across grade levels and content areas.
• Roll out to incoming Freshman in Fall of 2011?
