“True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice."

Goju-Ryu Karate-do is one of the main traditional Okinawan martial-arts. As the name implies, it lies on a combination of both hard and soft moves.

Stands for a philosophy of controlled, effective and flexible self-reliability, to be used in combat situations but also to apply in overcoming the difficulties in life.

Higaonna’s best student was Chojun Miyagi (1885-1953). Miyagi also traveled to China to study martial arts, just as his

master did, bringing his knowledge back to Japan where he began to refine the

martial arts he and his students practiced.

In 1930, at a nationwide martial arts showcase in Tokyo, a demonstrator asked Miyagi’s number one student what martial art he was there displaying. When that apprentice returned to

Okinawa and told that to his master, Miyagi realized it was time to name the art: he called it Goju-Ryu.

A Kata is a set sequence of karate moves organized into a pre-arranged fight against imaginary opponents. A kata is not intended to be a simulated fight, but rather the perfect guide of movements and flows from one movement to another.

Apart from techniques, training Katas is the best way to improve speed, agility, movement coordination and breathing control.

What is a Kata?

Katas are the result of centuries of knowledge and training, and are the Maps of any Karate Practicioner
