There’s no subjunctive in English,so we must use Past Tense.

Ex: If I go to London, I will see the Thames. EX: If I were you, I would speak portuguese.

Ex: If I had studied, I would have passed on the exam.

*SUBJUNCTIVE

Expresses a probability. If +Present + Future = Probability

If I go to Rio de Janeiro, I will see Copacabana beach.

If I study hard, I will pass my exam.

If I walk in the rain without carrying an umbrella, I will get wet.

OPEN CONDITIONAL OR 1st CONDITIONAL

Expresses a supposition. If + Past(subjunctive)+ Conditional= Supposition

If I went to Bahia, I would see the Pelourinho.

If I were rich, I would live in Paris.

If I won the lottery, I would buy a large house.

SUBJUNCTIVE OR 2nd Conditional

Expresses a supposition in the past. If + Past Perfect (had+ past part.)+ Past Conditional (would have+ past part)= Past Supposition

If Mr. Brown had gone to Italy, he would have seen the Pope.

If I had studied, I wouldn’t have failed my exam.
