Economic GrowthIT & Telecoms industry GVA contribution amounts to 9%

(£81 billion) of the UK’s economy.

The internet contributes an estimated £100 billion to the UK

economy (7.2% of GDP).

Optimisation of ICT could generate an additional £50 billion GVA across the UK economy over the next 5 – 7 years.

The total potential economic benefit from getting everyone in the UK online is in excess of £22billion.

Change in Schools and colleges is needed to support sector growthThe number of Computing A-levels taken across the UK

has fallen by 14% in the last year and 60% since 2003.

By comparison, other STEM subjects (Maths, Chemistry and

Physics) all experienced an increase in numbers between

2009 and 2010.

The number of ICT A-levels taken across the UK had

declined by 34% from 2003 to 2009 but has stabilised in

2010.

Change in Higher Education is needed support sector growth

The number of UK domiciled applicants to Computing related

Higher Education courses is 44% lower than in 2001.

Applicants to other STEM subjects have grown by 24%,

since 2002. Over the same time period applicants to

Computing degrees have declined by 33%.

Only 15% of acceptances onto Computing discipline courses

are female.

50% of graduates entering the IT & Telecoms professional

workforce come from a non IT & Telecoms related degree

discipline.

occupations only the figure is 23%

AgeThe proportion IT & Telecoms professionals aged under 30

has dropped from 33% in 2001 to 19% in 2010...

...additionally the number aged over 50 has almost doubled

in the same period.
