and Director of International Relations)
University CEU Cardenal Herrera,Valencia, 23 of May 2013
The world is changing…rapidly…
Introduction
Is the leadership in education changing at the same pace?
Introduction
Introduction
Evolving demands from superiors, financial challenges, faculty, and students create a turbulent environment in which
administrators must thrive. (Kalargyrou et Al., 2012)
Introduction
The current period presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities to universities, and there is no doubt that the
quality of leadership in the sector is crucial to developing the necessary entrepreneurialism and resilience required
(Wooldrige, 2001).
Introduction
Drawing from my own experience both of working more than 20 years in training of future leaders, and as Director of
International Relations, the purpose of this paper is to propose some elements of leadership important to face daily
challenges.
Leadership in education should be…
(1)…More international oriented…
…not only as a way to attract foreign students, but as a way to offer international programs signing strategic
alliances with partners all around the world…
Leadership in education should be…
(2)…More self sustainable…
…analyze the value-chain and see how it is possible to reorganize resources using synergies and
economies of scale…
Leadership in education should be…
(3)…More focused on developing competencies, not only knowledge…
…companies spend between six months and one year to re-educate students…informal test among high
profile managers…they hire people based on competencies. Knowledge is already assumed.
Leadership in education should be…
(4)…more focused on external stakeholders…
…the experience of Foro CEU Empresa...
Leadership in education should be…
(5)…more students oriented…
…Recommendation letters, Internships, Advices...
Leadership in education should be…
(6)…more risk-oriented…
…What region of the world? What new program? What partner?...a lot of risks…
Leadership in education should be…
(7)…more strategy-oriented…
…leaders have to think about future. Otherwise they are only administrators…
Leadership in education should be…
(8)…more people-oriented…
…every day tons and tons of human relations occurs in every university…leaders must be capable to
manage more and more different human resources…
Leadership in education should be…
(9)…less bureaucracy-oriented…
…Training, Training, Training in who has to know, what has to know, when has to know, assume responsibilities, managing agendas, defining
priorities…not “just for information”…
Leadership in education should be…
(10)…less papers-oriented…
…please, not only papers, but: “how many students each one attracts?, “What he is organizing?” “How important is that activity?”, “How many people he
impacts?…
Conclusion
This paper is just a tentative paper…I need your opinions…
