5 Things about University Librarians

5 Things about Course Reserves

① Course reserves are course materials that an instructor wants to make available for a whole class.

② Common examples of reserve materials are: textbooks, DVDs, or other course readings.

③ The fines for returning reserves late are higher than they are for other materials.

④ Most reserves check out for three hours. Some check out for two days.

⑤ Reserve items cannot be renewed or reserved.

5 Things about Library Scanners

① They are located on floors 1,2,5 & 6.

② They are free!

③ You can email a scan.

④ You can save a scan to a flash drive.

⑤ Always ask at one of the desks in the library if you need more help.

5 Things about Printing

① Printers are located on the main floor, in the Learning Commons.

② You can print from our computers, our laptops or your laptop.

③ Black and white printing costs 7 cents per page.

④ Color printing costs 40 cents per page.

⑤ Printing charges go to your student account. If you want to pay as you go, ask at the Information Desk for help.

5 Things about the Computer Helpdesk (in the Library)

① Located on the main floor.

② Open 8am-9pm Monday-Thursday. Friday & weekend hours too!

③ Funded by student technology fees – for students only and FREE!

④ Help with: software, applications, wireless, ONID, hardware & operating system diagnosis, and simple hardware replacement.

⑤ Hardly anyone knows about it – tell your friends!

5 Things about Group Study Spaces

① In 2012, the Valley Library was voted the best place to study on campus!

② Your group can reserve a study room.

③ All study rooms have whiteboards, and there are some with projectors. There are big study rooms, small study rooms and more.

④ Your group can use the group spaces in the Learning Commons (library main floor).

⑤ Your group can also use the Collaborative Learning Center, where there are math and science tutors available, whiteboards, and study spaces.

Study rooms can be reserved in advance.

Undergraduate students can check out rooms for 3 hours and graduate students for 6 hours.

The person who makes the reservation has to be the one to pick up the key.

5 Things about the Collaborative Learning Center

① Drop-in tutoring is available in Chemistry (Mole Hole), Physics (Worm Hole), Math and Biology.

② Appointments are available with Writing Center Consultants

③ Current hours are here: library.oregonstate.edu/clc

④ Most services do not start until Week 2 of the term.

⑤ It is usually called “The CLC.”

5 Things about Quiet

① Study rooms are quiet.

② The 6th floor is designated silent.

③ The rotundas on the 4th and 5th floors are designated quiet.

④ Study groups make noise. There are some parts of the library that will never be very quiet.

⑤ You can get free earplugs at the Information Desk!

① We have open stacks. When you want to get a book, you go and retrieve the book yourself.

② Librarians are here Monday through Friday and the library is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

③ When we’re open, someone is always here to help! Students and staff are ready to answer your questions at the information desk.

④ We answer questions about campus and can help you get to the right place.

⑤ This term, librarians are doing office hours in the Learning Center in the ILLC building. Mondays 11-1 and Tuesdays 11:30-1:30. Stop by!
