No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” - Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela Who: LIS parents, students and teachers What: School Wide Reading Initiative When: September 2014- May 2015 Why: To promote and develop a reading culture within our community For the 2014-2015 school year, the LIS libraries are again sponsoring a year of reading. Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend our LIS Reads celebration in the library on September 5th to introduce our whole school read, Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela, and kick off our year of reading. Throughout the month of September, there will be activities in the libraries, and at the end of the month, there will be a book club meeting and celebration for students and teachers to discuss the story. After the whole school read of Mandela’s life story, LIS Reads will continue with book clubs each term. Each term, there will be English options and Portuguese options announced for students to choose from, with reading levels ranging from the ELC to the Diploma Programme. Each term’s books have shared themes, so LIS community members can select the level and language of book most appropriate for them. Through this initiative, we hope to grow the reading culture at LIS, both at school and at home. Please encourage your child to participate by purchasing copies of LIS Reads – LIS Lé texts over the breaks and reading with them throughout the school year. The libraries will also have several copies of each text to lend for families who are unable to purchase copies over the break. Attached you will find a list of the selections for the first term of LIS Reads. Please contact Ms. Katy or Ms. Kerrie-Anne if you have any questions about these texts or the LIS Reads program. We look forward to reading with you! Sincerely, Kerrie-Anne Neary - Primary School Librarian Katy Jean Vance - Secondary School Librarian

Esperamos partilhar muitas leituras consigo! Atenciosamente, Kerrie-Anne Neary – Bibliotecária da Escola Primária Katy Jean Vance – Bibliotecária da Escola Secundária
