Providentially with the schools equipment I was able to loan the equipment to take the fit for purpose images as well as the test photography images.

Test Photography

Initially this was going to be my image for the front cover of the page however once taking the image and placing it onto the Photoshop template with all of the other test I did not think it was fit for purpose so I decided to go and take some different shots.

By using this test photography shot and following my planning schedule it still left me with enough time to retake the image and place it onto the magazine still working along side the production schedule to make sure the rest of the magazine was finished.

Contacting the publisher

This is a screenshot of an email I sent to the production manager at my magazine of inspiration (NME) asking about some questions on how they plan and follow their schedule. Unfortunately I did not get a response so I tried emailing some other magazines and fortunately Golf monthly replied with a production schedule template they follow and the deadlines of printing and publication of the magazine.

Page 11: Lo3.pptx

Interview draft

This is my interview draft written on Microsoft word. My inspiration for the article was from a recent NME interview with the Killers however more recently they had won the best festival act award I tried to use similar language the band members would use in similar places to make sure that it was realistic and relatable to the reader. There were 10 questions and answers for my interview which followed on from one another by always staying on the topic of the award they had just won.

Areas to Improve from Publisher feedback

Here are the EBI that I have improved on.

Below I have created updated versions to improve the efficiently to the magazine production process by creating a more in depth version of my flat plan and I have also updated and final versions of my front cover and DPS that are fit for purpose for my magazine release in May 2015

Hand drawn Drafts Front Cover

The masthead for my magazine will be SHUTTERS and will be in the Lemon Milk font style I am going to make the font colour white as it follows the house style of magazines of inspiration like Q and NME

The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. By having the prize near the middle of the magazine it makes the reader read the whole magazine until the end.

The strapline for my magazine is new music discovered in which I want my magazine to focus on new artist and bands upcoming in British Music industry

The main Headline I have chosen is `The Killers` This will be in a bold red font across the middle of the page which follows the house style I have created for the magazine also by using red it also symbolises love and passion which my magazine is for music.

The barcode is in the bottom right corner with the social media sites my magazine will be on keeping readers up to date with latest news and information about what's going to be in the next issue

By having another two images in the top right corner it can quickly establish what other bands feature within the magazine and are available as a poster. This is another way of getting readers by offering free posters inside the magazine

The main image on my magazine will be one of the leading indie/rock artists of the last ten years `The Killers` this gives the magazine the star appeal to attract a early large audience to the magazine.

Page 18: Lo3.pptx

Hand drawn draft (DPS)

The main headline for my magazine I have chosen is `Alex Turner` on the myriad pro font style because it is very simple and basic which Alex Turner represents about the way he makes music and doesn’t want the attention on him as it is a band. It will be in black font colour because this is matches his band logo. The Interview will be on the right hand side of the page because it is split up evenly with half of the page and makes it easy to read. The font colour I will be using for this will be Read for questions which matches the background colour for SHUTTERS masthead and black for the answers to establish the difference.

The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Arctic Monkeys have done over the past year and just recapping what s happening and an introduction what the interview will be about

The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal 1980 By having the dps in the middle of the magazine it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole magazine

The main image for the DPS is the artist with their arms out with no background which will convey the simplistic life that the band want to live but are getting frustrated with everything the media attention they are getting for things away from music

Page 19: Lo3.pptx

The puff promotion I have included on the front cover shows that you have a chance to win a prize if you purchase and read the magazine. The promotion I have offered on this draft are tickets to see Alt-J live which is a very popular band after there newly released album being very popular across the country giving the Richard Dyer Star Appeal to Readers purchasing the magazine The main headline and image for my magazine will be one of the leading rock/indie artist e.g. Arctic Monkeys with lead singer Alex Turner being the focus of the interview inside the magazine and double page spread.

Page 20: Lo3.pptx

Hand drawn draft (DPS)

I have decided to place the interview on both the left and ride hand side of the page because the interview has a lot of content I believe the reader will want to know about and this is the only way it can be put onto the DPS. The font colours will be red for the questions and black for the answer as red is the house colour of my magazine and black is and easy to read colour on a white background. At the bottom of the page in the middle I will have the social media sites and issue no. to show where to get the latest news and information for the magazine and what other issues they can purchase if the have not read the magazine before.

The page number I have chosen for the double page spread is 49-50 because this is directly in the middle of the page and it is what NME also do `Repeat` Steve Neal 1980 By having the dps in the middle of the magazine it allows the reader to reach the middle and then carry on reading the whole magazine

The stand first font my magazine is a introduction about what the Killers have been doing for the last ten years and what they have done to get where they are now and the interview will lead onto what they want to do in the future.

The main headline for the double page spread is `A decade of history` as I interview about what hey have done in the last ten years and what they are looking to do in the future and goals the y have set to reach.

The main image for the DPS is to be in the middle of page as it represents that the artists tis the centre of attention and everyone is looking to him to see what the future of The Killers holds.

Page 21: Lo3.pptx

Hand drawn Drafts Analysis

Firstly I have been inspired for my masthead that I have created by NME who use a similar red background to there masthead as well as the white text I am looking to use. This Steve Neale-1980 repeat has been used as NME have been an established music magazine in the indie/rock genre since (1952-Present) which NME have very strong brand recognition with their house style linking to the colours of the masthead. Furthermore although I have included a puff promotion inside a red circle for my magazine NME have used a red circle in the same place of the page in their 9th March Edition 2013 which I have used because I find it eye catching to the reader and follow the house style I am looking to create for my magazine SHUTTERS. Again looking at my magazine of inspiration NME I have seen that there main headline location and rotated text is very commonly used which literally makes the readers head turn so that they can read the whole headline and fully understand it. With making the readers head turn and also having a grabbing headline can make potential readers deciding which magazine to read purchase my magazine.

Page 22: Lo3.pptx

Hand drawn Drafts Analysis

For my DPS I have again been inspired by reading and researching into NME firstly the placing of my image for my hand drawn draft idea has not been used by NME as much as I believe it should have been. I think that by placing the main image in the middle of the page it shows that the interview/Article to take the centre of the page to show his/her importance about what they have said. With the text also going around the out side of the image can also have a very professional finish to the page which can be simply done by using the pen tool. Additionally for my text I am following the house style that has been created for my magazine which is very clear on the front cover as well as the DPS to do this I will have the questions in red text and the answers in black text. Which is also used by NME in there interviews to easily show and breakdown the difference between the question and answer.

Masthead

My magazine is called Shutters this has been inspired by market research I carried out in my LO2 presentation as it was the most popular name chosen by the audience.

I believe the best font style for my magazine will be Lemon milk from dafonts.com because it is very similar to the style of NME my magazine of inspiration and carries through the similar genre of the new indie different looking text which my magazine focuses on (New music from indie bands and artists)

Page 28: Lo3.pptx

Strapline

The strapline for my magazine is ‘New music discovered’

The denotation of my strapline is ‘new music discovered’ connotes that we have a passion for “Discovering” new indie music in the U.K. by having this strapline it grab the attention of the readers and potential buyers looking to buy a magazine illustrates what my magazine is about. Therefore this will hopefully increase sales and brand popularity of my new music magazine.

Page 29: Lo3.pptx

Main Headline

By following the conventions used by magazine and reading numerous editions I have established that they use short quotes from the interview as the headline for the front cover. This quote will go towards the bottom of the page but in a much larger and bolder text to the cover lines so that it is the main story to grab the readers attention. The font I will use for the main headline will be Lemon milk like the masthead as these two texts are what grab the readers attention.

Page 30: Lo3.pptx

Cover Lines

The cover lines on my magazine will be on both sides of the image which will be in the middle of the page so that they are easily broken up and easy to read. I have decided to do this because NME break their cover lines up to both sides of the page and sometimes place one in the mile but at the bottom of the page if they have four cover lines compared to the usual three cover lines.

The language I will be using on my cover lines will be enticing and exciting to make them read it and see what the stories of images that have been taken. To make sure that I have consistent readers each month the main headline and cover lines are crucial to the sales of SHUTTERS.

Page 31: Lo3.pptx

Puff/Promotion ideas

Page 32: Lo3.pptx

Puff promotion

For my magazine I will be offering a free wolf Alice download EP which has recently been launched by the band who fit perfectly into my genre of magazine and music.

On any magazines they have either a bright coloured circle with promoting the promotion or a banner on the top of the page. I will be using the banner at the top of the page with a bight yellow background to grab the potential customers eye with the EP download code inside.

Page 33: Lo3.pptx

Synergy with Social Media

For my magazine I will be using Facebook as the main source of cross media convergence of my magazine because from my research I found out that this was the most popular form of social media

By using the most popular from of social media my target audience use it is not any use to have a google + page for my magazine when no readers use it as their form of social media

Page 34: Lo3.pptx

House Style – What is it going to be?

The colours that I will use in my magazine will hold consistent colours of red white and the image background as it is for my front cover of the magazine.

I will have red text for the headline which will be on the top of the page and spread across the middle of the page. Hopefully when my magazine becomes more popular I will be able to cover some of the masthead like Kerrang and NME do.

Page 35: Lo3.pptx

House style

On the front cover I will have the social media and contact information in the bottom left corner

The barcode will also be in the same corner so that it is all in one place and if anyone wants to get in contact with me they can find it easily by the barcode.

The date of the magazines release date will be in the masthead for the magazine like NME do i.e. 12th April 2014

Finally the name of the issue will be on this white tab at the bottom of the page

Page 36: Lo3.pptx

Language – Double Page Spread

WHO is going to be interviewed as part of the main headline?

For my main headline I will be interviewing The Killers and how they have just won new awards at the British music festival awards show recently held

WHY? I will be interviewing The Killers because they are a world wide

recognised band and have many fans that will purchase the magazine because they have the star attraction that will make many people buy my magazine

WHAT Questions are you going to ask? As I will be interviewing them directly at the awards evening it

will be based around what they have just won and what they are going to do in the future they are looking to go into with a new album and tours.

Page 37: Lo3.pptx

Language – Double Page Spread

WHAT type of answers will be given? From my interview I will make sure that the answers to my

interview are humorous and are free flowing with a relaxed approach to the questions and is not a serious interview as they are likely to have alcohol while they were in the award show

HOW else will this appeal to the reader? This will appeal to the reader because as they are a similar age

to the band they will be able to relate with the language an humour they share so that the interview will be fun and enjoyable to read compared to other magazines where the interviews can be very formal and the artist/bands do not relax and get new answers from questions they have never been asked before

Page 38: Lo3.pptx

Step by Step

Here is my first step on making my front cover this is the background colour I will be using for my front cover of the magazineThen I made a red box which I added my masthead to I selected the lemon milk text for my masthead and used the ruler tool to correctly position sure the text and images

Page 39: Lo3.pptx

Step by Step

Here is the original version of my front cover image without being edited. To remove the background I had to use the quick selection tool and then selected the Image tab on the menu and from their I used the image adjustment selection/Hue saturation and changed it to 0 so that there are no rgb present in the picture

Page 40: Lo3.pptx

Step by Step

Once I had edited the image saturation I then used the spot healing brush tool to make the face look as clear as possible and add light to the image and can follow the gradient at the top of the page.

Page 41: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step

Then I added the image to the front cover with it being black and white I had to change it as well as using the magic wand tool to remove the background. Also I changed the lighting to the image so it stood out on the page more and attracted the potential readerUsing the shape tool to create the circle I then added a puff promotion with free tickets attract the reader. Then I put a puff promotion from the interview below the main headline as this Is what my magazine of inspiration done (NME)

Page 42: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step

The next stage was to add the barcode and social media sites I use for my magazine as part of social media synergy

• The next stage for my front cover page was to add the main headline along side the other cover lines to add so that it grabs the potential customers attention

Page 43: Lo3.pptx

Step by Step

The next stage was to include my strapline blow the masthead and a competition to win tickets to a gig

Looking at my page I felt the dead space in the top right corner was too noticeable and to follow my magazine of inspiration I included two images

Page 44: Lo3.pptx

First Draft Front Cover

Page 45: Lo3.pptx

Final Front cover

Main ImageAs well as the masthead the main image is just as powerful as it stand out the most on the front cover. By using the most recognised celebrity/musician as the main image means that it gives the readers and new readers the star appeal to purchase the magazine in my magazine I have used `The Killers’ for this star appeal

MastheadThe bright colours and large text size makes the masthead very noticeable and recognisable which helps the magazines brand name stand out. This is often what attracts the reader to a magazine or not so it was crucial that I made sure that my masthead was fit for the genre of my magazine.

DateThe date is a very important for a magazine and is always essential due to keeping readers on track of which monthly issue the magazine is.

Headline This is the seconds largest piece of text on the front cover behind the masthead this is because they want it to be noticeable and stand out to the potential reader looking for a magazine and the monthly subscribers. It is also a similar colour to the masthead to use the house style throughout the magazine

Cover LinesThese are articles and interviews that persuade the reader to purchase the magazine more. These cover lines promote an exclusive to their magazine with George Ezra

Page 46: Lo3.pptx

Final Version of Front Cover

Page 47: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step Double page spread

As I decided to not have a background colour I started off using the ruler tool to place where everything will go following my graphic layout plan I created during my pre production stage

Then I inserted the main headline to my page using the Myriad Pro font style and this was done by click on the text tool on the bar on the left hand side and typing and making the text size bigger and bold by using the options in the top bar.

Page 48: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step Double page spread

Then I placed the image on one page using the quick selection tool again to remove the background from the image and added a watermark effect to my page by double clicking on the image layer and changing the opacity in which I change it to 17%.

Page 49: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step Double page spread

After I added the watermarked image to my page I then had to insert and edit the main image. I started by changing the image to 0 saturation by selecting the layer on the right hand side and then went to image/adjustments/hue & saturation to get rid of any colour which was on the picture

Page 50: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step Double page spread

After editing the saturation of the image I then used the spot healing tool to add brightness to the image as well as making his skin have much smoother effect on the page.

Page 51: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step

Following on I then added the drop capital to start my interview and then carefully used the pen tool to craft the interview around the main image

I used the pen tool to manipulate the path of the text so that it can wrap around the picture so it does not overlap and has a professional image. To use the pen tool you have to select the pen tool in the right hand side column and create the path by clicking every time you need to change the direction of the text outline guide

Page 52: Lo3.pptx

Step By Step Double page spread

To make sure that the whole double page was covered I include the killers logo to kill some dead space I had from the interview by adding the logo of the band it also gives the reader the star appeal. I had to import this image and change the size of the image by clicking on the edge while holding the shift key so that the resolution of the image did not change place.

Page 53: Lo3.pptx

First Draft Double page spread

Page 54: Lo3.pptx

Final Double Page Spread

Pull QuotePull quotes are used to attract the reader with an interesting quote or statement the interviewee could have said. They are also used to break up long blocks of text to maintain the readers attention.

Drop CapitalThey are used to grab the readers attention because they can add visual attraction to the page and make a difference between the other pages in the magazine

Synergy with social mediaI have used synergy with my social media channels because it allows the reader to follow the magazine on social media so they can keep up to date every day as well as purchasing the magazine once a month.

Date an Issue no.This is important because it keeps readers up to date with the month and issue they are reading and what other issues are available

Main imageThis image is showing that the Killers are looking from where they have been and where they are now after winning an award moments before interviewing them for the DPS interview. The reason the image is in the middle of the page is because he takes centre stage when performing

Headline Text ColourThe text colour that I have chosen is red because this matches the house style of my front cover and clearly establishes what is the question and what the answer is

This is a very simple headline just stating who the interview is with and has enough star appeal to make the reader follow the whole interview.

Page 55: Lo3.pptx

Page 56: Lo3.pptx

Conclusion

In conclusion I eel that I am now ready to present my magazine brand to the publisher as I feel that I have prepared a lot of work for this pitch and the brand will be successful in the future with the goals I have set and am most pleased about my final front cover and DPS for my magazine that will be shown to the publisher during the pitch as well as the production schedule.
