LOAD BEARING WALL
Created by : NURUL NADHIRAH BINTI ZULKEFLI BUILDING SURVEYOR UITM SHAH ALAM
DEFINITION
NON LOAD BEARING WALL
i)loads to be carried and, before the use of cement mortar, the low strength of the joints.
ii) Modern masonry walls can be made to carry considerable loads by the use of high-strength bricks and mortar, but often a framed structure allows more freedom in the design of the facade as well as in the planning of the interior.
LOAD BEARING WALL
support the weight structural components :
i. Interior and exterior walls that support trusses and other systems are load-bearing walls.
ii. A party wall is a load- bearing wall shared by two adjacent structures.

DIFFERENCE OF LOAD BEARING WALL AND NON LOAD BEARING WALL
LOAD BEARING WALL
A load bearing wall is a wall that bears some of the building’s weight in addition
to its own weight
NON LOAD BEARING WALL
A non-load bearing wall is a wall that does not support any gravity loads from the
building, hence doesn’t bear any weight besides its own

DEFFECT OF LOAD BEARING WALL
it often happens that the internal walls have only small doorways, while the external walls have large windows.
Therefore, most of the load will be taken directly by the internal
If the building is narrow enough, the external walls alone can support the entire floor structure.
brickwork tends to expand, whereas concrete shrinks. Also, the concrete slab will deflect and rotate slightly at the edges when it carries its own load.
Shrinkage cracks causes of concrete foundation may contain small cracks because concrete shrinks as it cures.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF LOAD BEARING WALL
ADVANTAGES FOR BRICK SUPER STRUCTURE
i) Suitable for light ornamental work
(ii) Cheap
(iii) Afford great facility in maintaining proper bond in the masonary
(iv) Defects of careless brick layer can be canceled by plastering.
(v) More fire resisting
DISADVANTAGES FOR BRICK SUPER STRUCTURE
(i) Less strength
(ii) Less weather resisting qualities
(iii) Plastering or pointing is necessary
(iv) Gets damp.
(v) Salts present in the sewage react chemically with exposed brick.
