MANAGING DISCOVERY AND

LINKING SERVICES

Page 2: Managing discovery and linking services

AGENDA

• Trend towards consolidation of services for Discovery, Link Resolving and ERMs.

• About SFU’s reSearcher suite (CUFTS/GODOT)

• Case Studies:

• Simon Fraser University – Proquest’s Summon

• Acadia University – Ex Libris’ Primo

• Capilano University – EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS)

ABOUT CUFTS / GODOT – OPEN SOURCE

▪ CUFTS• The knowledgebase• CJDB: Public A – Z electronic journals listing• http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB4/BVAS

▪ GODOT • OpenURL link resolver and ILL/doc del requesting

software.• Searches CUFTS and partner library catalogues.• Auto populates interlibrary loan forms with data –

unmediated requesting.

CUFTS ERM – OPEN SOURCE

• Electronic Resource Management System

• Resource and License records.

• Provider records (publishers/platforms, institutional administrator logins).

• Basic COUNTER data storage and SUSHI retrieval for usage statistics.

• Public A – Z listing of databases (CRDB)

SUMMON

• Signed up in Spring 2010.

• We branded it Fast Search in case we decided to switch vendors at a later date, didn’t want to be tied to the Summon brand name.

• Catalogue records delivered daily by FTP.

• Scripted and automated.

• Electronic journal holdings added through the Serials Solutions Client Center and 360 Core.

TYPES OF TARGETS IN A KNOWLEDGEBASE

1. Auto-activated targets

• Aggregator packages: EBSCO, Gale, Proquest full text databases.

• Big Deal Packages:

• ACM Digital Library, JSTOR Archive collections, Project Muse

2. Managed targets – partially activated

• We subscribe to only some of the titles in this database.

• Library specific holdings/entitlements.

• Ingenta Connect (136 of 6554)

• Highwire Press (78 of 1443)

Page 15: Managing discovery and linking services

HOW TO MANAGE 2 KNOWLEDGEBASES

• CUFTS takes priority because it is our primary A-Z journal listing and knowledgebase for our link resolver.

• The Summon knowledgebase is only for indexing purposes – not for full text linking.

• Index-enhanced linking (direct linking) not introduced until 2011 in Summon.

FAST SEARCH

SERIALS SOLUTIONS 360 CORE - TIMELINE

• 2011 – project given to technical services support staff to update holdings in Serials Solutions once/year.

• Support staff not familiar with publishers, providers, platforms and licenses to make independent decisions.

Page 18: Managing discovery and linking services

LACK OF STANDARDIZATION ACROSS KBS

• Different names for the targets and providers.

• Different # of titles in similar sounding targets between CUFTS and 360 Core.

• Multiple targets to choose from, including potentially ceased targets.

• This work required a level of knowledge/familiarity with license terms and journal publishing to select the appropriate target and apply updates.

SERIALS SOLUTIONS 360 CORE - TIMELINE

• 2012 – CRKN Serials Management Task Group formed.

• CRKN targets in link resolver service providers for CRKN big deal journal packages.

• Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, T&F• Cambridge and Oxford University Presses• ACS, RSC, IOP, Sage, Erudit, CAIRN

SERIALS SOLUTIONS 360 CORE - TIMELINE

• 2013 – Continue with minor maintenance to account for platform changes for publishers, journal transfers, new databases and cancellations.

• 2013 – Serials Solutions reveals unique 3 digit code for databases/targets in 360 Core.

• 2014 – SFU investigates automated procedures for updating our holdings in Serials Solutions.

Page 25: Managing discovery and linking services

SERIALS SOLUTIONS CLIENT CENTRE - TIMELINE

• 2014/2015 – our systems analyst created a program using the 3 digit PQ code.

• Electronic Resources Librarian adds the PQ 3 digit code to partially activated resources.

CHALLENGES AND OBSERVATIONS

• At SFU, in spite of neglecting 360 Core for almost 4 years – relatively few reports of false hits and broken links for the size of our online collection.

• Patrons no longer reporting broken links and moving onto the next result.
