Is your child at risk?

There is a high possibility

that your child might commit

a crime and end up in prison

if they dropout of high

school.

Page 14: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

(Sum, Khatiwada, & McLaughlin, 2009)

• Earnings for students who quit school continue to decline: in 1971, male dropouts earned an estimated $37,087, which decreased by 35% to $23,902 in 2002.

(Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education)

What are your options?

Give up on your child Do nothing Find out more about why your child is failing Algebra Get a plan

Page 24: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Why do kids fail?

• Most children fail because of Math Anxiety.

• Math Anxiety is when a

child has a fear of math

• It interferes with your child’s mind and prevents them from concentrating in math classes.

Page 25: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Math Anxiety

• Makes your child believe that they are incapable of doing math

• Causes your child to have negative attitudes towards math

• Creates fear of answering question in class incorrectly

Page 26: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Math Anxiety

• Causes your child to worry about what their peers will say if they give a wrong answer

• Makes your child unable to sit and focus in math classes

• Makes your child feel embarrassed and frustrated

Page 27: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

More Information

• If a child has Math Anxiety it is also more likely that he/she might have Test and Social anxiety as well. (Perina, 2002)

• Students who have Math Anxiety are less likely to continue working on a problem if they fail to understand it the first time

Source: Liberty University

Page 28: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

When does the symptoms start?

Source: Liberty University

• Some students experience Math Anxiety as early as third or forth grade

(Jackson & Leffingwell 1999)

• Most math anxiety occurs in middle

school when students experience social pressures

(Perina, 2002)

Page 29: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Causes…

• Poor test grades. • Inability to complete difficult

assignments. • Negative attitude towards math by

Parents. • Negative attitude towards math by

Teachers.

Source: Liberty University

Page 30: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Causes…

• Complicated math books that are difficult to understand.

• Lack of motivation. • Children see their parents having a job

and doing well without math so they believe that they can do the same.

Source: Liberty University

Page 31: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Harsh Reality

• Most employers are requiring that candidates have great reasoning and logical thinking skills that can ONLY be developed through math

• Most blue collar jobs are requiring employees to have reasoning skills

• HINT: Not because you(PARENTS) got a job without math means that your child will

Page 32: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

More Causes

• Gender biases: Many teachers promote the false idea that females cannot perform as well in math as males(Jackson & Leffingwell 1999)

• Explain-Practice-Memorise approach cause students to lose interest …teachers need to be more creative

• Teachers insisting that there is only one correct way to answer a problem

• Students have a misconception that they must do math quickly; this speed causes nervousness

Page 33: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

What do you think?

• Is it possible that your child might be experiencing Math Anxiety?

Page 34: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

There is Hope

A research was done on effects of humour on math anxiety and test performance by researchers at Western Carolina University, University of Iowa and Western Michigan University.

Page 35: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Research

• In the research, 3 sets of students where asked to sit a math test.

• They were all told that it was a

difficult math test. • Group A was given funny

cartoon to read before the math test

• Group B was given poems to read before the math test

• Group C did the math test without being given anything

Humour Manipulation

Page 38: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Humour, Jokes and Laughter

Through humour, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers and once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be you can survive. -Bill Cosby

Page 39: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

What really happened?

• The humorous cartoons created

a positive state that was incompatible with anxiety.

• The brain was temporarily free

from interference by anxiety so it was able to focus on the math problems and find solutions

Sample Cartoon

Page 40: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

More solutions for Math Anxiety

• Have a positive attitude towards math and encourage your child that he/she can do it.

• Help your child with difficult math problems by

breaking them down into simpler steps. • Ensure that your child know the basics. Learning math

is a building block process, one step builds on another • Make sure that the textbook your child is reading is

simple and in a language that they understand

Page 41: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

More solutions for Math Anxiety

• Make math fun, simple and cool • Talk to your child about Math Anxiety and help

them to overcome it • Motivate your child to continue trying after getting

a math problem incorrect

Page 42: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Summary so far

• 30% of unemployed are dropouts • Dropouts are 20 times more likely to end up in jail

than a college graduate • 1.3 million high school students dropout per year • Failure in Algebra is the #1 trigger of dropouts

Page 43: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Summary so far

• 70% of students who don’t pass Algebra by 9th

grade dropout • Math Anxiety is one of the main reasons for

Algebra failure. • Humour helps math anxiety.

Page 44: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

So what do you think?

• Do you agree that ensuring that your child’s Algebra grade improves should be a priority?

• You would also agree that your child cannot avoid Algebra if they want a promising future.

• You would also agree that the best way to help your child to succeed is to remove Math Anxiety with cartoons and humour.

Page 45: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Another important question

After learning the truth about

your child’s future and knowing that it is not a question of “if” but “when” they will dropout.

Would you agree that you are now

more concerned about your child’s Algebra Grade?

Page 46: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

Humour and Cartoon

After learning that humour and

cartoons helps to remove Math Anxiety and opens the mind for learning and problem solving you are now wondering how you can include humour and cartoon in math.

Why Math is Supercool is so excellent?

A little history: • Math is Super Cool’s co-founder, Peta-Gaye Reid,

while volunteering at a Children’s Home had realised her passion. While teaching the children math, she realised the problems most of the children were facing and why they were getting failing grades.

• After discovering their problems, she applied a strategy that helped their grades to improve.

• She subsequently wrote a book using those same strategies to help children around the world.

• After publishing her book she was shocked at the wonderful reviews that parents and children left about her book. And so, she continued to write to help more children around the world to achieve their dreams and get their first A in Algebra.

What did she do?

• After realising that teaching math was her true

passion she quit her day job to focused on her true passion.

• She started to investigate the psychology behind

children failing math and the impact of failing algebra.

• She also wanted to know how she could improve her

books so more children could pass Algebra. • She realised that the lack of motivation, anxiety and

being uninterested were reasons why children were failing; therefore, she included strategies in her books to prevent these problems from occurring.

Peta-Gaye Reid Math is Supercool

Co-Founder

Page 57: Mathissupercool corestory rev_4

She did not stop there…

• She created a website which helps children to perform

well at math and created fun and humorous power-point slides which parents and children can use for motivation.

• Math is supercool is now a growing community with many children getting their first A in Algebra and changing the direction of their futures.

She saw the need…

• Peta-Gaye saw a need for others just like herself to have the same opportunity to live their dreams and be happy.

• So she tailored the skills she have learnt and the discoveries found during research in a program that create a unique experience while learning math.

• A new, fun and exciting way that provides results.
