The Need to Move the Needle on Women and Girls in STEM

In the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs has been three times

greater than non-STEM Jobs.

80% of the fastest growing occupations in the United States depend upon mastery of mathematics and scientific knowledge and skills.

While women comprise 48% of the US workforce, just 24% are in STEM fields, a statistic that has held constant for nearly the last decade.

75% of all college students are women and students of color, they represent only 45% of STEM degrees earned each year.

Almost 30 percent of all male college freshmen planned to major in a STEM field in 2006 compared with only 15 percent of all female freshmen.

Women with STEM jobs earned 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs – considerably higher than the STEM premium for men.

Exercise- Both Mentor & Mentee Participate. This meeting is to pre-qualify the relationship to make sure there is alignment and that the two of you can work well together.

mentee is already working in STEM, steps to garner more opportunity, support and promotion. Please integrate how you prepared for a meeting and follow-up suggestions.

The next time you meet, bring another woman leader to meet your mentee or go to an event together to teach her the ropes of networking effectively. OR suggest a really good book for

The Company LRN.com does some groundbreaking work in this area- led by Dov Seidman and Ted Leonsis wrote a book on this topic– Google them on Youtube as they have a lot of good

insights.

Based on your conversations with your mentee, suggest a professional experience here that they wouldn’t have otherwise received that is STEM focused. A trip to the Science museum, a Math

competition, 4 Hours interviewing young women and leaders at tech company, visit to a manufacturing company that uses robotics.

LEARN & PLAY! If needed and your mentee is over 18, you can send your mentee to meet with someone you know well who will host her for this experience. For her independence might be

ideal for her to go on her own.

ANOTHER OPTION if your mentee is working in STEM, attend a skill building class or workshop that directly relates to professional development goals.

Research something related to your professional passion and go out this week or next to really experience … Angle this toward something you might want to do professionally, a charity you

believe in, an internship you might want to secure.

One idea is to join a college class or local STEM school on a field trip or Science experiment. Go to a local business accelerator and observe a new Startup that is really INNOVATING… your

secret agenda also is some power networking here. Shadow a family friend who has a cool event or opportunity coming up. Plan to interview some leaders!

ACTION ITEM- Think is there an area in your life where you are supporting younger girls/ women with all you have learned so far? Also, If you are looking for an internship or a job- have you specifically asked people to help with focused introductions?

Break down your SmartGoals you wrote on Week ___ into quarterly action items. Or what you will do in the next 90 days, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months.

Suggest at this juncture you meet 1 – 2 times per month and one time should be at a event where there is some opportunity for networking or connecting with a larger group you and your

mentor can learn from. If you love the coffee meetings- by all means keep them going and GOOD LUCK!

ACTION ITEM- Mentor, consider at this point transitioning the relationship to a Sponsoring relationship. Sylvia Ann Hewlett taught us that men are 42% more likely

to have a sponsor. A sponsor is a champion of a young woman who makes introductions for jobs, internships, internal promotions. We call this Mentor+.

THROUGH ENGAGING ONE MILLION MENTORS, OUR GOALS ARE TO:

1. Increase the percentage of U.S. high school girls planning to pursue STEM careers, currently 13%

2. Increase the percentage of U.S. young women pursuing undergraduate degrees in STEM fields in higher education up from 45%

3. Increase the percentage of U.S. women staying in STEM careers, currently 24%, through a workforce mentoring, paid internship and sponsorship programming.

WE WILL:

4. Lead a national call to action for corporations to join MWM and and capture metrics around mentoring girls and young women in STEM.

5. Provide an automated, scalable and easy-to-use platform to eliminate barriers and facilitate large numbers of STEM professionals (male and female) with tools to becoming effective mentors in partnership with 35 national organizations reaching over 18 million girls.

6. Match participating corporations to scaled non-profit partners and educational institutions in need of STEM mentors and role models (Fall 2014)

7. Provide an environmental scan on “who” is doing “what” in mentoring, particularly women and girls related.

8. Recognize best practice and ‘who is doing what’ in mentoring girls (middle school through careers) in STEM learning.
