WHAT IS MANAGER DO?
Many responsibilities – data centers, staff mgt, telecommunications, servers,
workstation, website, user support, regulatory compliance, disaster recovery etc
Connect with almost all the dept– Accounting, marketing, sales distribution etc
Can have direct influence on the strategic directions of the company
As a technician, a software developer or network installer
Pro and Con of being a Manager
Pro Have more control Make more money Work on larger scale Can make difference Get the credit of team good work Get opportunity to develop not-IT
skills Get opportunity to determine
strategy for dept and organization Be able to add more value to dept
and org Have opportunity to develop,
coach and mentor other people
Con less control of your life have more responsible – more
credit if things right and a bigger price to pay if things go wrong
Carry a great deal of responsibilities and have to routinely make difficult decisions
Numerous headaches when managing people, meeting for project budget and schedule, dealing with challenging employees and administrative issues
MANAGERS IN GENERAL
General definition– “assembling the resources to achieve a mutually
agreed upon objective” (G.Puziak,2005)– “getting things done through other people” (AMA
President, 2008)
Styles of Manager Management
Command and control– Based on classic military structure– “You direct your employees and your boss directs you”– Doesn’t allow for disagreement or input from subordinates– System is often faster and costs less. – Employees often unhappy– Hard to know what value is lost where collaboration and
teamwork is absent– This style has lost popularity
Collaboration– Modern style– All levels are actively involved in the execution of a business– Increased personal satisfaction for workers – Often better and more cost effective decision
THE STRATEGIC VALUE OF THE IS DEPARTMENT
IS mgt has become one of the most critical positions in the new economy
Primary functions of IS dept– Applications development– Technical operations
IS dept goals– Align with organization’s goal
The value of IT manager– Technical knowledge + business expertise
DEVELOP AN IS STRATEGY
Identify– Who are your team members? What can they do?– Why/how is technology important to your organization?– What are your assets?– Who are your customer?– What are your customers’ needs?– How do you plan to satisfy these needs?
Keep your department central to the company’s operation
– Align with the goal of the entire organization

Involving other managers in the management of IT requires the development of governance structures that encourage their activities participation in planning and controlling the business uses of IT
