Music Magazine SurveyAnalysis of results

Half of the people who completed the survey were female. Although males did take the survey it shows that females were more willing to participate rather than males. Even though two thirds of my audience were female, I have decided that my magazine will not be aimed only at females, but I will add more articles on fashion, male celebrities, gossip and practical advice to appeal to them more. However, I will make sure that my male audience will enjoy these articles as well, as I do not want to lose that audience.

1st Question

WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?

Everyone from my audience apart from one person is 15 to 20 years old. This shows that the target audience for my magazine are younger people, so the magazine I will make will have to appeal to teenagers. The respondents being younger is useful as I want to appeal my magazine to a younger audience. Furthermore, this shows that a younger audience use media platforms like the internet. This is interesting and means I can use media platforms in my magazine as the audience are open towards this, as they are younger meaning they are willing to try new things, like this survey. As most of the respondents are in a teenage age group I can use informal language to appeal to them. I can also portray my opinions in the magazine as well as write a lot of articles on many different topics as a younger audience is more approachable to new things. From this data I have come to the conclusion that I am going to aim my magazine at an audience aged from 15 to 20 years old.

2nd Question

WHAT IS YOUR AGE?

All respondents had different genres of music they were interested in, showing that the respondents all have different tastes and are varied and do not like the same thing. The only genres of music

not chosen by any of the respondents were “punk”, “jazz” and “country. However, I had a couple of custom responses saying “almost all genres” and “all of them”, showing that my audience is flexible when it comes to music and does not listen to only one genre. The option “pop” got the most votes, however I have decided that my magazine will not be based on popular music. In

order to appeal to every single person in my audience, all music genres, except for the not chosen ones, will be mentioned in every issue of my magazine.

3rd Question

WHAT GERNRE OF MUSIC ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

I kept the question four musical based linking to the question three. I wanted to find out the genre of music my audience is the most interested in first and then how often do they listen to that music. I have done this to see how obsessed with music my audience is and how much music means to them. All respondents listen to music, nobody responded that they never listen to music. A big majority of my audience listens to music at least four hours a day showing that music is important for them as they are listening to it often and means that the audience know what they are talking about with music. Furthermore, as the audience listen to music a lot, they might be interested if the music magazine includes a free CD or music recommendations. This question was important to my audience research as it has shown that music is an important aspect of my audience’s life meaning they are likely to buy a music magazine as they enjoy listening to music often.

4th Question

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC A DAY?

When asking what the audiences most favourite UK music magazine is the

most popular answer was “none” which shows that my audience is not

really used to buying music magazines. Therefore, I will have to put a lot of effort and creativity into

making my music magazine, to make it unique and nothing like the magazines

that already exist to appeal to the current non-readers of music

magazines and persuade them to start buying it. However, the magazines

that my audience reads the most were Q and NME. This shows that at least a

part of my audience is familiar with one of the most popular magazines in

the United Kingdom.

5th Question

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE UK MUSIC MAGAZINE?

From the data I have collected it is clear that the most common favourite magazine feature is “interviews”, as readers are interested in finding out information straight from the source. Therefore, I will include many different interviews in my magazine to appeal to the target audience. Second most popular answer was “articles”, which is perfect as I was already planning to include many articles in my magazine on a lot of topics that would appeal to many readers. In conclusion, I am going to make the magazine have interesting content with a number of interviews, articles, reviews, star gossip but no freebies.

6th Question

WHAT FEATURE OF A MAGAZINE ARE YOU MOST INTERESTED IN?

From the data I have collected, I have found that the highest percentage of participants would pay a maximum of £2.99 per issue of magazine. Even though some people stated they would spend more, it would decrease the audience because some people may find it too expensive, as a couple of responders would like the magazine to be cheaper or free. This would result in readers not being attracted to buy the magazine anymore.

7th Question

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM MAGAZINE PRICE YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY?

I used this question to find out the frequency respondents buy music magazines. Most respondents replied with “monthly”. This shows that if I target my music magazine to be monthly it will be more popular as only a very small number of people buys music magazines weekly. Also, my audience is all young people who might not afford buying a magazine every day or every week. A couple of people said that they “never” read music magazines. This is an important information for me, as I will have to make my music magazine completely different from the ones that already exist, as people do not seem to be interested in reading them. Therefore I have decided for my magazine to be monthly, so that I have more time to work on every magazine issue.

8th Question

HOW OFTEN DO YOU READ MUSIC MAGAZINES?

I included this question in my questionnaire to find out whether my readers would be interested in a magazine with a free gift or not. Most of them answered “yes”, however there is not that big of a difference between the votes, therefore to appeal to my entire audience I have decided to not always include free gifts but only sometimes. This way I can spend much more money on one gift and make sure all readers will enjoy it.

9th Question

WOULD YOU CHOOSE A MAGAZINE WITH A FREE GIFT OVER THE ONE WITHOUT?

I used this question to find out if my audience attends any music events, so that when I will be creating my magazine I will know whether I should include information about upcoming concerts, festivals or tour dates. My audience seems to be very interested in these events as all of them except for one person attend these events, most of them goes to both of them. This might be because my audience consists of young people and they are the ones attending these kind of events the most. I am very happy with the results of this question, as I originally wanted to include a double page spread in my music magazine focused only on upcoming music events.

10th Question

WHICH ONE OF THESE MUSIC EVENTS DO YOU ATTEND?

From the 34 responses I collected, I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have a target audience of teenagers aged from 15 to 20 years old. My music

magazine is going to be focused on all genres of music but mainly Indie, as my audience likes all genres. I will

include a lot of interviews, articles and information on upcoming music events, as my audience seems to be

interested in reading that. My magazine will be monthly and the price of one magazine issue will be £2.99, since the

target audience are young people who might be on a budget. Some issues of my magazine will include a free gift and some will not, in order to appeal to my entire audience.
