Notes

Page 2: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Objectives:

The student will: Distinguish the difference between a chemical and a physical change

Investigate and understand physical and chemical changes in matter

Page 3: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Objectives:

Investigate and understand chemical formulas and the types of bonds found in simple compounds

Understand the Law of Conservation of Mass

Law of Conservation Mass/Matter

States:Mass/matter is

neither lost or gained during a reaction, though it may change in substance, form, phase or state

Page 6: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Physical Change

When a substance changes its size or shape or phase/state of matter but still retains the properties of the original substance Paper being torn into little pieces

Page 7: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Chemical Change

When a new substance is created through the combination of chemicals or energy▪Paper burning and turning into ash (carbon)

Page 8: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Chemical Formula / aeThe way a substance or compound is expressed symbolically

▪CO2 is Carbon Dioxide

▪H2O is Water

▪C6H12O6 is Glucose

Page 9: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Chemical Equation

A math-like equation that shows how chemicals are combined

C + O2 CO2

▪ means “Yields”

Page 10: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Reactant

Located on the left side of the equation, these chemicals combine/bond together or react with each other

Carbon (C) + 2 Oxygen atoms (O2)

▪C + O2 CO2

Page 11: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Product

Located on the right side of the equation, this is the outcome of the reaction

C + O2 CO2

▪Carbon (C ) + 2 Oxygen atoms (O2) = Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Activity Chemical list Clues to Change

Goal:How does this goal support our school’s student achievement objectives?Identify activities you will participate in and/or methods you will use to acquire/improve the skill. How will you build opportunities for repeated practice of the skill into your plan? What methods will you use to get feedback on your performance (from other professionals and from students)? What data will you collect to demonstrate your progress? What indicators will demonstrate that you have achieved (or made progress) toward) your goal?

Key Understandings:

Simply mixing materials does not always produce a chemical change. There must be evidence of a chemical change▪Measurable ▪Observable

Page 16: Notes gb lab 07 chemical detective

Physical Change

Same substance only in a different: Shape Size Phase/State of Matter▪ Solid▪ Liquid

▪Gas

Chemical Change

A New substance must be formed!!!!!!!

Evidence of a Chemical Change

One or more of these occurs
