OpenStreetMap?

OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone

who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use,

holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways. [1]

› Wiki-style approach for geodata› Database with nodes, ways and relations› Data is described through tags› Data + tags (database) can be used to render

maps› Everybody can contribute

OpenStreetMap – Licensing

› Right now: CC-BY-SA 2.0

› Transistion to: Open Database License (OdbL) 1.0

› CC-BY-SA is not designed for databases, Odbl is especially designed for databases and derived work

OpenStreetMap – Contribute

› Add new data› Collect GPS tracks & and points and upload/tag› Digitize from Aerial imagery

› Improve existing data› Refine positions of data (e.g. bulk imports)› Add more information to data (Adresses, one-

way streets …)
