Good notes follow a structure relating all the parts to comprise the whole. Notes must be so organized that the researcher can match the main points with their details and examples and can relate these key points to one another.

The INFORMAL OUTLINE may be a simple listing or dash method.

Formal OutlineThe FORMAL OUTLINE follows a

structure or certain format. It is methodical. A formal outline centers the subject matter of the text at the top of the page and every noted idea begins new line. A roman numeral written at the upper left hand of the margin marks each main idea. Second ideas, which are listed and identified by capital letters are indented to the right of the roman numerals. Minor details are indented to the right of the major details and are marked by Arabic numerals. Lastly, examples which are marked by small letters are further indented.
