DEFINITION OF THE INTERNET

Cambridge Dictionary - http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/the-internet?q=internet - The large system of connected computers around the world that allows people to share information and communicate with each other. For example, “I found out about the bombings from/on the internet.”

The Internet is used on most pieces of technology, phones, laptops and televisions, almost everything. It can be used to search things on engines like google or it can be used to work apps. Almost every person uses the internet, in school it is used, most people will have a smart phone, laptop or smart television. On a daily bases some adults in the US spend up to 11 hours using the internet, that’s almost half of the day. The internet can be used for bad

things and for good things. For example, someone can steal your banking details over the internet, which is a bad aspect but then you can find out a phone number to get help to get your banking details back, which is obviously good.

To use the internet, first you open a search engine (like Chrome) then you type in a search bar, for instance you could type- https://www.google.co.uk and that would come up with the homepage for google.

DOMAIN NAMES AND IP ADDRESSESDomain Name Definition- the part of an email or website address on the internet that shows the name of the organization that the address belongs to.The Domain Name is the address you see at the top of the website your on, for example Google’s Domain name is https://www.google.co.uk .

IP Address Definition- Internet Protocol Address (IP Address): a number that is given to each computer when it is connected to the internet.The IP Address is used as another way of having a domain name. The IP Address is a long number which isn’t easy to remember, but is given to every website.

For example…

Most people know the web address/domain name of websites like google, which you would type into a search engine. But the computer uses the IP Address as well, we have both because humans generally can’t remember numbers like 89.145.77.102 but we can remember names like https://www.google.co.uk .

DATA PACKETS AND PACKET SWITCHING Packet switching and Data packets are used in the transfer of data. For example, you might send an e-mail to another person, but your email will be split up into many different data packets. If you send a file maybe 2 GB in size, this would be split up into 512 bits of data.

FUNCTION OF ROUTERS What is a Router? Definition- A Router is a piece of electronic equipment that connects computer networks to each other, and sends information between networks.

A router is a device which allows all internet using technology to connect to the internet.

What can it be used for?Routers are used to connect devices like laptops to the internet. They transfer data or information from one network or device to another.As well as the above, a router can also filter any unauthorised information out of the network.

How does it do this?Routers have a micro-computer inside them. The micro-computer stores all of the networks the router is connected to and it also records how busy each network is. The section where it stores this information is called ‘the routing table’.When the data comes through the router to get it to its destination. First, the router must assess where this data will be going. Then, it will try to find as many network routes for it to get there, after this it will use the routing table to find the most available and fastest route to get to its destination.

Routers can be used to transfer information to anywhere around the world, for example you might send one piece of information from Italy to somewhere in Brazil, the information would go through lots of different routers until it got to its destination.
