To strengthen the awareness of a soldiers
mind when exposed to war.
To help soldiers who have been through
a traumatic war.
Understanding the affects will make it
easier on future troops.
Emotionally: destroys a soldier and his or her family
Physical effects: Bodies are not ready to withstand the true affects of war
Psychologically: Breaks the mind, and leaves it impaired
Coping with war- Soldiers are constantly
surrounded by death.
Manali Oak states that, "Witnessing
deaths becomes an almost everyday
incident for soldiers at war”(Oak.)
Soldiers are often plagued with
flashbacks of the things they have done
and seen.
Army infantry scout for units that pursued Saddam Hussein in his home town of Tikrit”
Suffers from flash blacks.
One of his reoccurring flashbacks is, “Calling in an Apache helicopter strike on a house by the Tigris River where he had seen crates of enemy ammunition carried in. When the gunfire ended there was silence. But then children’s cries and screams drifted from the destroyed home”(Bocanegra.)
Possible physical side effect of war:
Illness
Lose of limbs
Death
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that a person
can get by living through a traumatic
event.
Re-experiencing Symptoms: Includes
reliving traumatic events, nightmares, or
scary thoughts.
Avoidance Symptoms: Includes losing
interest in things the person liked before the
event, staying away from certain places,
feeling strong guilt, depression or worry.
Hyper Arousal Symptoms: Includes being on
edge, easily startled, and having trouble
sleeping as well as violent outbursts.
When a soldier goes home they may not
fully be there.
They can suffer from a number of things
such as, post traumatic stress disorder,
flashbacks, and addictions to things.
While on the front lines soldiers develop
ways to cope with what they have seen
and done.
Some people develop addictions to
alcohol and drugs.
