POINT OF VIEW
A Joe Fasen Enhanced PowerPoint presentation
Point of view is the viewpoint from which a story is told.
A story is told through the eyes and mouth of
a character or a narrator.
It is the “voice” of the story.
In the first-person point of view, the story is told by one of the characters. The character
uses pronouns such as I or me.
• The narrator is a character in the story.
• As the reader, you experience the story only from what that character knows, thinks, and feels.
In the second-person point of view the story is told by you. The narrator will use the pronoun you.
• The narrator is you
• You, however only know what you are told you know
In the third-person perspective the narrator is neither a character or you. The narrator will use pronouns such as they, he and she.
• The narrator is someone other then you
• Usually the narrator knows things the characters don’t.
In the third-person point of view, the story is told by a narrator who is not a
character in the story.
