Project TEN

• “Ten” means “give” in Hebrew

• Brings together young Jews from Israel and around the world

• 3 months in developing country

• Volunteer for both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations

• Focus on sustainable development

• Jewish learning

• Volunteering as an expression of Jewish values

Locations chosen on the basis of:

• Need

• The Jewish Agency’s ability to provide infrastructure

• The Jewish Agency’s ability to provide security

• Presence of other NGOs on the ground with whom to form meaningful volunteer service





Project TEN

Centers Established in Pilot Year (2012)

•Gondar, Ethiopia

•Hyderabad, India

•Kiryat Shmona, Israel

Planned Centers (2013)

•Oaxaca, Mexico

Goal: 12 Centers Worldwide (of which 3 are in Israel)





Programs/Partners in Gondar

• The Jewish Agency’s Gondar Complex for future olim to Israel

• Yenege Tesfa (Hope for Tomorrow) Home for orphans and street children

• Municipal workers, other NGO’s involved with “plastic city”

• Creation of “urban fields” – sustainable income for single-mother families

• Gondar University





Programs/Partners in Hyderabad

Partner: B’Tzedek veteran local NGO

Projects:

•LSN Rainbow Girls Home for homeless children

•MV Foundation for children’s rights, Bridge Camp

•Aide et Action Centre in one of Hyderabad’s 1,000 slums

•Kinera Society home for the elderly

•Save a Child’s Heart Initiative (SACHI)





Programs/Partners in Kiryat Shmona

Partners: Israel Pathways, Masa/Tlalim Yuvalim Pluralist Center for Judaism

Projects Include:

•Youth Futures (The Jewish Agency)

•Ayalim Student Village

•Tel-Hai College Hillel

•Kiryat Shmona Animal Shelter





Programs/Partners in Oaxaca

Partner: Cadena, Committee for Natural Disasters & Emergencies

Projects:

•Increase communal resiliency against disasters

•“Kitchen Class”

•Promote ecosystem regeneration

•Develop local leadership





Jewish Service Learning

• Curriculum developed by The Jewish Agency’s Makom

• Connects volunteering to Jewish values and texts

Explores three themes:

• Social justice and social responsibility

• Rabbie Abraham Joshua Heschel’s conception of Shabbat - experiential



Project TEN costs to participants:

• Most of the funding comes from TEN Gold Shareholders

• Fees of only $10 per day average (low compared to other volunteer programs)

• Center in Kiryat Shmona eligible for Masa grants
