PROPP

He analysed different plots in the simplest narrative elements.

These where done in the following 7 categories:

THE HERO

Reacts to the donor and saves the princess, often resulting in them falling in love with the princess.

Page 4: Propp’s character theory

THE VILLAIN

Locked in a constant struggle with the hero, often trying to harm princess. 

Page 5: Propp’s character theory

THE HELPER

Aids the hero

Appears at critical moments in the move, to help aid the hero

Page 6: Propp’s character theory

THE DONOR

This character will give the hero advice and help them during their ‘quest’

Page 7: Propp’s character theory

THE DISPATCHER

They send the hero on their ‘quest’.

This could be a family member!

Page 8: Propp’s character theory

THE FALSE HERO

Makes false claims to try and disrupt the hero’s success

They are played to be seen as heroic throughout, but end up to he evil

Hence the name ’false’ hero

THE PRINCESS

They are seen to reward the Hero.

They are either seen a little through the movie or are in and out throughout.

THE PRINCESS FATHER

Difficult to distinguish

Could act as a key figure

Could be in competition with the hero.
