Alexander Pushkin
Here you see how intensely a boy remembers an old lady who took care of him in his childhood.
It is the poet’s loving tribute to his nanny, the nurse who was the dear doting sweet heart of his childhood. He regards his nanny as the invisible companion of his austere fate “Dear doting sweet heart of my childhood
companion of my austere fate”
This helps the reader to identify the location of the house. The
house is located deep in the wildwood.
“In the lone house deep in the wildwood”
The Poet’s nanny, who waits eagerly and
patiently for the boy to turn up.
“How patiently for me you wait”
She looked through the window inorder
to see the child to come back
“ Alone beside your window sitting ”
She curses the clock because it is too late
for the child to return home
“ You wait for me and blame the clock ”
with faltering wrinkled hand she knits but
because of apparent anxiety she cannot
continue the work
“ While in your wrinkled hands, you knitting
Fitfully falters to a stop ”
The external landscape with the crumpling gate, the lone house deep in the wild wood and shadowy road create a picture of her inner mind scape haunted by nameless forebodding and dark anxieties which she seems to see
“ Beyond the crumbling gates the pine trees ”
Shadow the road you watch so sell Nameless forebodings, dark anxieties oppress your heart; you cannot tell
“ What visions haunt you Now you seem to see.... ”
