“World War II involved global conflict on an unprecedented scale; the absolute urgency of mobilizing

the entire population made the expansion of the role of women inevitable. Women took on a variety of

roles which included working on the land and in factories, supplying the much needed guns and

ammunitions.. Several hundred thousand American women served in combat roles, especially in anti -

aircraft units. The practical demands of the war changed social customs beyond all recognition.

Women now enjoy far greater social freedom than before, with more opportunities. Without women’s

involvement in the war, victory would not have been possible.”
