Stages of Professional Change

Age 17-24: DISCOVERY
Age 25-40: GROWTH
Age 40-55: DISENGAGE
Age 55+:TRANSITION
- Discover strengths and passions while exploring careers
- Most choose initial career path based on BOTH passions and strengths
- Rewarded on strengths; Career morphs to strengths
- Rewarded for tasks: “Get things done”
- Change career/job based on pursuit of “success” rather than passion
- Rewards are external
- Requirements shift: From Getting it Done to “Getting Results”
- Career lacks passion; Become restless and dissatisfied w/ career
- Focus either on future retirement or career altered by external forces (Lay-off, etc.)
- Yearn for meaning personally and professionally
- Fear retirement “wasteland”
Someone Moved My &*$!*& Cheese

What Did You Base Your Initial Career Decision On?

When Did that Change?
Third Biggest Career Mistake
The third biggest mistake is that starting in Career Phase 2 (Growth), we make career decisions based on strengths, rather than purpose (passion).– Rewarded based on strengths– Shift from an internal reward system (passion)
to an external reward system (corporate America)

WORK GROUP ACTIVITY
1. Write down 10 strengths. Strengths come from your mind. What are you good at? Personal/professional.
2. Rank them (and re-rank) with 1 being the best strength.
3. Second, write down 10 passions. Passions come from your heart. What do you LOVE doing? They can be personal and/or professional.
4. Rank them (and re-rank) with 1 being the most passion.
5. Circle words from both lists where you sense ENERGY. Energy can be felt, heard, sensed. Choose carefully.
6. Raise your hand when finished and a workshop leader will review your list and provide a draft (time permitting).

ACTIVITY – PART 2:
1. Look at the strengths and passions, and “energy” words.
2. To develop a Purpose Statement draft, find one action verb that has the most energy from the list. If the same word is on both lists, that’s usually a pretty good indicator. (In the previous example, “inspiring” shows up on both lists, and has “energy” associated with it.) So the purpose statement begins with: “My purpose is to inspire…”
3. The next step is to ask “to what/whom?” So in this example, we’d ask “To inspire what?”
4. Begin to play around with the words, or ask for assistance.
5. Check final draft with workshop leader.

Second Biggest Career Mistake
We fear making any career course corrections (because we fear change)– Even though we’re designed to grow and prosper, we
“settle” for a job that doesn’t fulfill us because we’re afraid to change
– That fear debilitates us completely– We cycle through the same job(s) at different
companies and don’t face the truth. This cycle damages our self-esteem
– Passion is the career fuel, but we don’t have any!

THE Biggest Career Mistake
We don’t build a career plan to move from where we are to what we want– We put our career on auto pilot and wait for the
companies to tell us what to do– We put ourselves at the mercy of our employers– Even though a career plan is easy to create… we don’t
do it! We don’t take control for the most important part of our lives (other than our families)
– This has devastating consequences to our happiness and our financial well being
