•Prepare a presentation on the various services available on the Internet.
Information Retrieval
•The Internet is considered as a storehouse of information.
• It contains information almost about any topic on any subject in the form of web pages.
•These web pages are located on a large number of web servers on the internet.
•Electronic mail is probably the most popular and widely used internet service.
• It is used to send text messages electronically to individuals or groups of people.
•You can send or receive attached mails like documents, pictures, audio and video, with messages.
• It is a fast, efficient and cost effective way to communicate with friends, family members or colleagues in any part of the world.
Newsgroups
•This service allows you to communicate with people to share your interests.
•For example, if you want to discuss about the latest development in Aeronautics, you can join an science exploration group.
Chat Services
•Chatting is a way of communication on the Internet by means of exchanging text messages.
• It is one of the most commonly used services of the Internet.
•Specialized chat programs like Yahoo Messenger, Facebook etc. are available for the purpose.
Social Networking
•Social networking establishes interconnected Internet communities that help people make contacts that would be good for them to know, but that they would be unlikely to have met otherwise.
•Social networking sites allow help strangers connect, based on shared interests or views or common language or religion or nationality-based identities.
•MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter are some social networking sites.
E-Shopping
•The process of shopping done over the internet is called online shopping or E-shopping.
• It is very popular amongst users because it is more efficient than physically going into stores.
•The internet provides the environment where shoppers’ demands are fulfilled.
•Using the Internet, a shopper can scrutinise the product’s prices from various stores sitting at one place.
Blogs
•A blog is a website that allows users to share opinions and discuss various topics in the form of an online journal.
•A blog is normally a single page of entries. There may be older entries but the “main page” is what people would like to see.
•A blog is organised in reverse-chronological order, from the most recent entry to the least recent.
Uploading And Downloading Files
•You can transfer files from one computer to another on the Internet.
•The File Transfer Protocol(FTP) makes it possible to upload files from a local computer(FTP client) to a remote computer(FTP server) or download files from a remote computer to a local computer.
Telnet
•Telnet is a network service that allows you to log into a remote host and execute commands on it as if you were logged in locally.
• It is generally used by software developers and by those who need to use specific applications or data located at a particular host computer.
Video Conferencing
• It refers to real time video communication between terminals.
•You basically need a webcam and a personal computer to start video conferencing.
• It is extremely useful because it saves both time and travel expense
